I am a 4th generation German trained orthopaedic shoemaker meister (OSM), which in Germany is a health profession on par with the optometrist and other allied health. The training I did went over a 7 year time frame in a combined apprenticeship and college model. I am also trained as a podologe in Germany which is the German version of a chiropodist/podiatrist.
I am working in Australia for over 20 years in private practice as a pedorthist and qualified as a certified Pedorthist custom maker in Australia. Parallel for 20 years I was working with the Japanese Foot and Science Institute in Nagoya Japan as a consultant. When I arrived in 1987 in Japan I was the first of a series of OSM doing training in Japan. My first training course in Japan was on in February 1988 and was followed a few years later by a training program which ran up to 3 years part time. The later program was running for 18 years. Now in Japan they do have a full time 2 year college course in orthopaedic footwear/pedorthics.
I am running training courses in Pedorthics Australia for over 10 years now. Currently I am in consultation with an Australian Public University in regards to setting up a bachelor program for Pedorthics.
I presented in Germany, Japan, Korea and Australia on Pedorthic and foot health matters. I am chairperson of the IVO2012 international orthopaedic shoe technology and Pedorthic congress. It is all about foot health, orthoses and footwear.
