I currently use the society for my private practice insurance needs, but in a moment of boredom I went to comparethemarket, com and now have a quote for 5 million pounds worth of cover for the sum of just under £90.

Has anyone got experience of using insurance outwith the SoCP?

Or can someone give me a good reason why I should not?

Edit: I have just spoken to them on the phone and they have told me that this does not cover medical malpractice. Still my curiosity is now up and I intend to look further.

These threads come up from time to time.

I think the consensus of opinion is that while you will certainly be able to find cheaper, it may not be tried and tested within a podiatry context in civil law, which of course the Society's is.

The Society, BCPA and the Institute all have robust insurance deals in place for their members. The Alliance probably has, and perhaps someone from the Alliance could confirm?

As an Expert Witness I accept instructions to provide expert opinion on a few cases of podiatry malpractice each year, both against private practitioners and Pods in the NHS.

With my podiatry hat on I can confirm that in the event of a case being brought against us, and given the talent for wriggling out of paying which most insurance companies seem to be able to display to an astonishing degree, we all really need the best PI insurance we can obtain.

Yes, Alliance members have £6m of cover through Balens specialist medical insurance. The policy is specially worded and specific to the needs of all foot practitioners.

That's what I thought John - thanks for confirming.

Thanks both. I did try searching but came up with nought. I am still a bit of a newby on here for that.

There is only one thing worse than the fear of god and that is of course losing a case.

I don't know how you managed it, When I looked on compare the market.com, it did not recognise chiropody or podiatry!

    Hi all,

Apologies for hijacking this thread but just wanted a bit of feedback on this subject. I work for a UK Public Liability Insurance Broker and one of the trades we cover is Chiropodists. We don't really advertise this occupation as we cover over 300 different trades and currently concentrate our efforts on other ones.

The Chiropodist cover we have is £63.60 for £1,000,000 cover. At the moment we do not know how this compares so just wondering how much you pay for this cover through your professional bodies (or wherever else you obtain it from)?

    Hello Plins

Coverage in the UK generally depends on the level of service provided, eg. invasive surgery is naturally expected to cost more than routine. However, I doubt very much if any registered professional is carrying less than £5 million indemnity. The costs vary depending upon whether the individual is insured or the insurance is via a professional body - obviously, the latter costs less.

I have some knowledge of professional needs; please pm me through w.liggins@talktalk.net

I prefer using EasyCover, they cover professional indemnity and commercial general liability, the service is great and the price rates is affordable. If your interested, here is the link: easycover.ca I hope it helps.
