I have 3 patients who have restless leg syndrome. They seem to manage without medication. One of the patient's eats at least one banana per day - she swears it keeps her RLS under control......It does not work for everyone....

I am not sure that the RLS is neuological in nature. It may be more related to reduced oxygen getting to the nerves. The movement of the legs may be the body's response to low oxygen levels. In tests associated with our mechanical calf massager the leg movements were greatly reduced and in some cases eliminated. If you would like to find out more please send me an email and I will send you links. selwyn@selwynfirth.com

My recommendation is to let the GP know, and request iron levels be tested. I have also witnessed this in a number of clients with undiagnosed CAD, so always do a doppler u/s assessment for any audible coronary irregularities. (Just my experience - don't have any research to back that up)

I have read in the Medscape article that Magnesium can help, so I have recommended it to clients.
I too have RLS, but have not started taking any Magnesium supplements yet.
Ideally though, Peripheral Neuropathy should be ruled out first. I would now recommend a client to make an appointment at their GP for a blood test to check out or rule out vitamin deficiencies first, and then tell them about the Magnesium supplements. If I tell them about the Mag first, they will rather do the supplements than visiting their GP, which can be detrimental.

    hi
I have had this problem for 2 years along with movement disorder.
when i was on a break from podiatry i did some training in hypnotherapy and put a self hypnosis/suggestion program in a cd seemed to help also take 2 co-codamol (8mg) when bad also seems to help.

seems to be trigger factors in this condition the three i have found are stress alcohol and temp changes (shame about the alcohol!!!!)

on a podiatry note i sometimes suggest that the patient tries a glass of tonic water 1/2 hour prior to bed (quinine) without the gin!:dizzy::dizzy:

I occasionally have suffered with this [?] but I have found accidentally that deep water running has improved the symptoms. Whether the pressure from the water whilst exercising improves venous return I am not sure. Some of my patients who are also doing DWR have also reported a reduction in symptoms.
    Cheers,
    Jo

When my wife takes nighttime cough and cold medications she gets restless arm syndrome. It certainly does not lead to a good night's sleep for either of us.
