Toenail chipping

In the last week the baby toenail on my right foot chipped on the right side. Didn't think too much of it but today when I was trimming my nail on my left foot the nail on the baby toe lifted up and I had to trim it off. There is still nail underneath but it feels very thin. Could this be caused by using a gel nail polish on my toes?
