The CIGNA Falmouth Road Race began in 1972, and has become one of the elite events in distance running attracting annually many of the best athletes in the world. A running team in Massachusetts, will compete in the 35th CIGA Group Insurance Falmouth Road Race (August 12th) wearing red shoelaces. The significance is to draw attention to childhood obesity and how best to overcome the problem. The red laces are a signature element of the Saucony Run for Good(SM)Foundation. Saucony, Inc., a subsidiary of The Stride Rite Corporation , is a leading global supplier of performance athletic footwear and apparel. Saucony, Inc established the Foundation to financially support non-profit organizations that offer fitness and running programs for children. Childhood obesity has become a growing concern with serious, long-term effects on health and disability. Seventeen percent of children ages two to 19 are overweight, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and retrosective studies have shown eighty percent of children who were overweight at ages 10 to 15 years were obese adults at age 25 years. CIGNA have asked their employees to support the initiative by wearing red laces. The proceeds of "If You Can't Race, Lace" campaign sale of red laces will benefit the Run for Good(SM) Foundation. Saucony, Inc.

Last year Heather Mills McCartney launched a celebrity shoe auction on eBay and the sale of proceeds of donated footwear went to Mines Advisory Group (MAG). The organisation employs more than 2,400 people worldwide to help provide safer futures for lives affected by conflict. Heather’s call to the famous resulted in 78 high-profile celebrities, from the world of film, TV, pop, sport and the arts all donating their shoes for auction. Wayne Rooney sent a pair of Nike air zoom football boots, Darcey Bussell's silk ballet shoes and black leather thigh boots from Alice Cooper. Ex Mrs McCartney donated her Stella McCartney stilletto boots. This year Soles4Soul, an international charity dedicated to providing free footwear to disadvantaged people around the world have received a sizable donation from See Kai Run Footwear. The sheepskin shoe company donated 10,000 shoes of their footwear at an estimated retail value of $350,000 (US). The shoes are earmarked for children in poor areas of Honduras and Sudan.

Just in case any pods were thinking of a similar promotion, individuals and other groups can do their part by coordinating a ‘Gently Worn’ Shoe Drive.

When the photocopy man comes to the office of "She who must be obeyed, (her in doors)", he always leaves small packets of jelly beans sealed in a packet. There are up to six jelly beans per pack, making them ideal for diabetics to carry as an emergency supply of glucose. Not sure if that is the purpose but cetainly makes for a useful give away and promotion.

In Australia, the company which produces them is at: http://www.corporatetreats.com.au/
