Jerry is a virtual mate of mine - together with Bernie Zipfel in South Africa we have written a few papers together. This is a good summary of ape-human transition - worth a watch

Read that. I have known Lee for nearly 30 years. Yes he is larger than life in all ways. However he is also a decent scientist from Wits (and I am on their staff). Yes he is quick to make comment, Yes he is quick to make prognostications. However, he is also a bloody good scientist, who works his tits off in the study of human evolution. The finding of fossil is down to probability; he is in work by 5 each morning and there till 7 in the evening (though admittedly the last two hour was in the pub. Thus it is not surprising that he has found two hominid fossil; most of us dream of finding one. Yes Lee is a bull**** artist, yes he is larger than life. And we need them big time. If you reference Dart for a moment (Taung Child etc), he honestly believed that he owned that skull. While I cannot speak too highly of him, the arrogance of such a thought process is disgusting. What Lee has done, is to turn over to public access all fossil finds within an incredibly short time. Frankly good on him. He has chosen to publish in open access, rather than hang out for the "grandiose" of Science et al (been there done that, bought its tee shirt, means F*** all). Get my point? Rob

  4. Sometimes the established order needs a good kick up the arse. All for that.

This paper arrived on my desk this morning. Bernhard Zipfel is an ex-PhD student of mine and we have been close friends for perhaps 25 years. Jerry Dr Zilva is a virtual mate. Bernie has done well for himself - we are all very proud of him. "It is a very poor apprentice that cannot surpass the Master" is the phrase that I currently have in my head. It is over file-size limit to upload, so I have placed in my dropbox, to be found at: https://www.dropbox.com/s/oo4lurkjt... 2018 The Volution of the Human Foot.pdf?dl=0 I have cleared it for public access. The first author is a PhD student of Jerry's; it buy's one pause when one sees the full circle turning. Rob
