£250-£700 for foot orthoses. What's that in dollars about $500- &1,400?

    Pricey.

Not one DPM or orthopaedic foot & ankle specialist on staff.....?

    Hello Derek,

Ok that makes more sense then. If you're going to charge ludicrous prices for an in-shoe device, the sticker shock should make people wince and forget all about their foot pain ! I am clearly not charging enough...

BTW I have used optics to cast feet. I believe some of the systems are becoming very good but there are inherent problems with them. The biggest is getting a good capture of the posterior calcaneus. I also found that the software conversion to a volumetric cast is a challenge. I am not convinced that these optical systems perform well for every pathology or foot.

    Hi David

I can only agree as I get sent some of the ones that are not "cured" by other disciplines that are connected there, for me to sort out:D

    Cheers

We have a fine group of public servants in the ASA!

And yet their website still claims 98.95% success rate...

    Tut tut.

Oh and I had heard considerably more than £1000. But that could be hearsay.

Oh, and since Craig is probably sleeping off the jetlag still i'll save him posting this link to the OTHER P&B thread.;)

    Derek,

I am from one of those 'other' disciplines, I fully appreciate what you are saying.

It could be worse. They could be selling Foot Levelers :)

    Hi Robert,

I believe you heard that from me - I stand by my hearsay;).

A dissatisfied P and B patient told me he had spent nearly £3000 on 5 prs of orthoses from P and B.

I managed to obtain a good result for considerably less:D.

Suprised the ASA did not want to see any research to back up P and B treatment efficacy claims:confused:.

    Dear All,

Doesnt this one come around every two to three years.:pigs:

I remember a series of Advertorials in the national press a few years ago making the same type of claims based upon a similar story.:pigs:

I believe that they put a sock on foot and scan the foot non weight bearing using the markings on the sock as the reference points for the laser to scan.

    HOHUM another winner.:deadhorse:

Have you heard about the new Pharmacy chain

    SHEMISTRY

    and the new Chiropractic franchise

    SHIROPRACTORS

David, did this patient not get their money back as P&B promise??

Is this chap Les not breaking the law by using the title 'consultant'?

    Hi Ian,

The title Consultant is not protected in the UK. I believe the SCP do not allow their members to call themselves Consultant unless they hold or have held a substantive Consultant NHS post. The HPC will allow their members to call themselves Consultant as long as they are not deliberately misleading the public. For example, I can call myself a Consultant (I choose not to) because I work as a Consultant in several private Hospitals.

This chap is neither a member of the SCP nor the HPC, and so can call himself what he likes. He is, I believe, an Osteopath.

Money-back guarantees are a good marketing tool. In reality they often don't work. P and B will not immediately slap a cheque on the counter if a patient is not happy. Instead they will try to address the problem. Entirely laudable, unless this necessitates several visits to a clinic several hundred miles away, as in this case.

I had another patient who did get his money back, but it cost him more than the orthoses (only one pair this time) to do so in terms of time and train-fares.

If you read the Advertisng Standards Authority (ASA) link on Roberts post you will see that they are pretty toothless when it comes to dealing with this type of ongoing promotion. For those who haven't seen them P and B advertise in Daily Newspapers using big (1/4 and 1/2-page adverts.
They (the ASA) are not happy with the 95% success rate claim, and suggest it is reduced to something more reasonable - 90%:D.

According to DTT (a gentleman I know and respect) the owner of P and B drives around in a New Bentley............... hmmmmmmm:rolleyes:.

Would the British Osteopathic Association not respond to a letter or two?

    David,

Thanks for clearing that up. With reference to the new Bentley I suppose we shouldnt be suprised - he claims to dispense 3000 pair of orthoses a year, and at approx £1000 each I suspect he blows his nose with £50 notes.

Out of interest has anyone read his book???

    Hi Laurence,

From what I know about the British Osteopathic Council they would not listen to another profession trying to ring-fence the treatment of the foot for themsleves.

Thats if this chap is an Osteopath. Its hearsay, but this time I think I heard it from DTT.

    Hi Davidh

Yep thats right he ran an osteopathic clinic for several years specialising in orthotics.

There were several allegations of improper conduct with female patients some years ago the outcome of which I do not have the exact details but the newspaper reports as I remember them stated the female patients got to the steps of the court and found it too distressing to proceed.

He disappeared off the scene for some time and then P&B appeared and he was the driving force behind it.

I have just received this weeks copy of the local paper ( which is now on it's way to my PC expert to put it on here, thanks Rob ;) ) where they make a quite staggering claim for the orthotics,

Watch this space and see if you can spot it :D

    Cheers
    Derek;)
