Foo Fighters' new LP heralds some brutal truths, writes Andrew Murfett.

IT HAS taken 16 years of skirting the issue as leader of the Foo Fighters but Dave Grohl is ready to talk about Nirvana. And as an entry point into the conversation, there are few neater segues than I Should Have Known, the standout track from the seventh Foo Fighters album, Wasting Light, which is released today.

''There's lots of emphasis on that song because it's the album's darkest and most emotional,'' Grohl says.

It's also the first to feature Nirvana's surviving members (Grohl, guitarist Pat Smear and bassist Krist Novoselic) since the 1994 death of frontman Kurt Cobain and Nirvana's subsequent demise.

Grohl's lyrics speak of losing people close to him, the regret of not being able to save them and the pain of seeing them die.

''Most people assume I'm writing about Kurt,'' Grohl says. ''But unfortunately, the scenario in this song has happened to me more than once. And when I sing it, it's for all of those people I've lost in that way.''

The track focuses on the risk of regret and the feeling of helplessness in losing someone. The song surmises that death is permanent but in this case was avoidable.

''Years ago, I wouldn't have written this song because I didn't want to answer this question,'' he says. ''But there's a freedom of expression in being able to say exactly what you feel, no matter the consequence.

''It's easier for me to talk about Nirvana now because I understand it more than I used to. ****, I was practically a kid when Kurt died. I didn't understand much of anything. I'm very proud to have been in Nirvana. It was really fun sometimes. It was awesome … And sometimes it wasn't. But we achieved so much.''

Wasting Light arrives at an intriguing juncture in the Foo Fighters' narrative. Butch Vig, who helmed Nirvana's masterpiece Nevermind, has produced the album. It was recorded in the cavernous garage at Grohl's home in the Santa Monica mountains.

The album's arrival was deemed an appropriate point to employ filmmaker James Moll to record footage for Back and Forth, a warts-and-all documentary on the making of the album that reflected on the band's history.

The band has always coalesced around Grohl. Yet the film establishes just how much the line-up - guitarist Chris Shiflett, drummer Taylor Hawkins, bassist Nate Mendel and former Nirvana guitarist Smear - has solidified.

No mere puff piece, Back and Forth begins with Cobain's suicide and does not bypass any of the band's unrest, personal struggles and ego clashes.

In fact, somewhat unflatteringly, Grohl's image and personality dominate and shape the band. Asked about the perception it creates of him as a single-minded leader, Grohl smiles widely.

''How about self-absorbed?'' he suggests, half-joking.

The film tests the hypothesis of Grohl as rock's universally esteemed nice guy. Two disgruntled former band members reveal their messy, uncomfortable departures and the ruthless efficiency of their dealings with Grohl.

Individually, we ask is Grohl a tyrant and perhaps a perfectionist?

''He's not a perfectionist,'' Smear says. ''But he does take everything [musically] really seriously. And you don't want to disappoint him.''

Shiflett chooses his words carefully, too. ''He has a goal in mind when recording a song or playing a show,'' he says. ''It's about attaining that goal. That doesn't mean it's perfection.''

Mendel says: ''He looked like a tyrant [in the film]. I don't think that's fair … There were problems that created some friction and difficulties … You can't just wish those problems away.''

Drummer Hawkins concedes he did not initially support the film's making. His objections are understandable. It closely covers a 2001 drug overdose in Europe that left him in a coma for two weeks.

''Maybe because I went through some tough times it makes it harder for me,'' he says.

''I find it difficult [to watch]. But I also know it's good for business. It brings people closer to us as a band. I watch a lot of rock docos and I know the most interesting part is when the guy falls apart. Everybody loves a train wreck. But when you're it, it's a little uncomfortable.''

Having lost Cobain, Grohl kept a bedside vigil for Hawkins. The two now describe their relationship as ''like brothers''.

No doubt the event had forced Grohl to recall being grief-stricken for months after Cobain's death.

It took him eight months to just begin writing and recording again. A demo recorded on cassette tape and containing mostly pop-leaning rock songs ( in which Grohl played every note) that were almost the antithesis of Cobain's dark, sinister compositions became the first Foo Fighters album.

Smear, Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith were drafted and the band's first interviews became cringeworthy affairs intrinsically focused on Nirvana.

''We all knew there would be a focus on Nirvana,'' Grohl says. ''But I never wanted to use or exploit Nirvana to this band's benefit. I wouldn't be here if it weren't for Nirvana. But I wanted to give Foos a chance. It was also not long after Kurt died, so it was difficult to talk about. This was a friend of ours who killed himself. It takes years and years to just be able to talk like this.''

Even as the band's following grew and the line-up evolved and eventually settled over six albums, to outsiders, for all intents and purposes, Grohl was the Foo Fighters.

The group are global stars, having sold about 20 million albums and downloads. Grohl insists their crowning achievement so far, headlining to 80,000 people at Wembley Stadium in 2008, worked mostly due to their cohesion. ''If we were up there as a bunch of strangers, we couldn't have pulled it off,'' he says. ''We've been to weddings and funerals together and we've celebrated our babies being born together. It really is like a family and that connection between us makes a big difference.''

It was after this Wembley show the band decided to withdraw and embark on an open-ended hiatus.

''More than anything, we were worried people would get sick of us,'' Mendel says. ''There's not much you can really change when you have the same musicians with the same goal.''

Eventually, as Grohl spent 2009 recording and touring as drummer with the supergroup Them Crooked Vultures, he quietly began writing Foo Fighters songs. He also began thinking about Vig as producer.

''Butch was a great choice,'' Hawkins says. ''Our producers have to be good at working with Dave. Usually, there's a point where the producer crosses a line and becomes the bad guy in the making and it didn't happen. Butch handles Dave well.''

Grohl says the differences in working with Vig now, compared with 1991, are mostly superficial: he wears cologne now and drives a much nicer car. The two also share a connection underpinned by the experience making Nevermind and losing Cobain.

''Butch and I went through some beautiful and really horrible experiences, which we're bonded by for the rest of our lives,'' Grohl says.

The Foo Fighters rose slowly out of the shadow of Nirvana before fans recognised them as their own band.

This new album, then, is seemingly rooted in the history of Nirvana: having Vig produce it; recording it ''old-school'' in a garage to analog tape; having a hero of the band, former Husker Du guitarist Bob Mould guest (on Dear Rosemary); and, of course, hosting Novoselic. ''This is not intended as a retrospective album,'' Grohl says. ''But it is about life, loss, dying, starting over, feeling born again, second chances and surviving.''

It's also intended as a virtual reboot for a band possessing an imposing arsenal of now-classic hits, such as Everlong and All My Life. Ballad-free and brimming with potential hits, it's arguably their most rocking album yet.

Grohl dismisses those who insist the most challenging music cannot be made in a comfortable environment, such as, say, his garage. ''How you feel during a recording influences the way that it sounds,'' he says. ''Some days during the making, I didn't get out of my pyjamas. You forget you're a band millions of people enjoy on the most important record of your career.''

The band are slated for an Australian stadium tour later this year, which means Grohl will spend the next six months selling the album, its key song I Should Have Known and, with that, talking about Nirvana.

''I'm really proud of the album and that song in particular,'' he says. ''If it means I have to explain it to everyone, that's cool.''

Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven has been named the greatest rock ballad of all time in a new RollingStone.com online poll.

The 1971 classic beat out songs by the Beatles and Rolling Stones to land atop the new list.

In naming the track their number one, publication editors wrote, "If the entire genre of Classic Rock had to be reduced to one song it would probably be Stairway To Heaven. It's been played a squajillion times on the radio since it came out in 1971, and it doesn't show any signs of going away."

WAIT! There are actual U2 fans out in the world? The only time i run across them is at U2 dot com....none of my friends like them. E Street Band saxophone player Clarence Clemons has died in Florida aged 69.
A spokeswoman for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Marilyn Laverty, confirmed the death yesterday. Clemons was one of the key influences in Springsteen's life and music.
He was hospitalised about a week ago after suffering a stroke at his home in Singer Island, Florida.

Known as the Big Man for his imposing 196-metre, 122kg-plus frame, Clemons and his ever-present saxophone spent much of his life with The Boss.
His solos became a signature sound for the E Street Band on many songs.

Varieties include Back in Black Shiraz, Highway to Hell Cabernet Sauvignon and You Shook Me All Night Long Moscato.

They've sold millions of albums as one of the greatest all-time bands and now AC/DC hope to do a similar trade in wine.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees have teamed up with Australian winery Warburn Estate for a national release of AC/DC The Wine.

Sourced from wine regions in the Barossa and Coonawarra, varieties include Back in Black Shiraz, Highway to Hell Cabernet Sauvignon and You Shook Me All Night Long Moscato.

AC/DC The Wine will be available exclusively from August 18 in Dan Murphy's, BWS and Woolworths Liquor stores.

"We wanted to make sure that AC/DC's hometown fan base could have easy access to their rock icons' wines," said Steve Donohue, general manager of buying for the Woolworths Liquor Group.

"For us it was a no-brainer to make it available nationally, no-one misses out.

"This is a world-wide phenomena and a first in the marketplace."

The feud between Oasis rockers Noel and Liam Gallagher heated up on Friday after singer Liam issued a libel writ against his brother over claims a show was cancelled due to his drinking.
Liam, 38, called his older brother a "liar" and said accusations that the band pulled out of an appearance at 2009's V Festival due to his hangover were a slur on his professionalism.

"I have taken action against Noel Gallagher's statement," Liam, now frontman of his own band Beady Eye, said in a statement published in The Sun newspaper.

"The truth is I had laryngitis, which Noel was made fully aware of. What Noel has alleged this time went beyond rock-and-roll banter and questioned my professionalism," the fiery vocalist said.

"I tried to resolve this amicably but have been left with no choice but legal action. All I want is an apology."

Noel, 44, on Thursday said "every cloud" had a silver lining after hearing that Liam's fashion shop in Manchester had been ransacked during the city's riots.

Oasis split up in August, 2009 after the sibling tension that provided much of the band's creative impetus finally exploded into an epic row before a festival show in Paris.

Noel walked out after the argument, marking the end of a band that had been in the vanguard of the 'Britpop' music movement of the mid-1990s.

Noel is now a solo artist while Liam's new band released an earlier album this year.
