Discussion in 'Break Room' started by mike weber, Jan 13, 2010.

  1. As it has been pointed out 5 is hard and it can be a daily thing I recon.. Mark great come back with your list.

So lists in any cateorgy will work. I´m going to start an Alphabet list every day a New letter.

So A I did think AC/DC from my old home town and then there is Alice Cooper but went with another option If you listen to this you might find yourself singing along 5 hours later.

So Aerosmith feat Run DMC - Walk this way Aerosmith feat Run DMC YOU TUBE CLIP.

    Have a good day people.

What an extremely difficult choice to make. O.K., here goes:

    1. You Fool No One - Deep Purple [Live in Europe]

    2. Mistreated - Deep Purple [California Jam]

    3. Written All Over Your Face - Glenn Hughes [Soulfully Live in the City of Angels]

    4. Nights in White Satin - The Moody Blues [Days of Future Passed]

    5. Scheherazade - Renaissance [Live at the Carnegie Hall]

(No. 3 refers to Glenn Hughes a la Trapeze and Deep Purple - not the Glenn Hughes from the Village People - just thought I'd mention that.)

There were just so many other groups I wanted to include such as Steely Dan, The Alan Parsons Project, Pink Floyd, October Project, Jethro Tull, AC/DC, Rainbow, Whitesnake, Journey, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix.................the list is almost endless!

    Fascinating thread!

  10. Sorry to be dense but what's an NH post?

Yep. And as it goes, there was a video taken of the pre meeting (we have one every day)

Perhaps he can explain how the anatomy of the foot is so completely different from the insole pattern.

Or, more likely, will just complain at how mean we all are.

    Cheers

  12. Heres another top 5 I came up while in the lab this morning.

Certain bands are huge in their country but never quite become big in other markets. These bands may have a near religious following at home.

    1. Phish USA - Waste. Phish waste You Tube clip

    2. The Tragically Hip CAN- Poets Tragically Hip Poets You Tube Clip

    3. Split Enz N.Z. - 6 Months in a leaky BoatSplit Enz 6 months in a leaky boat

    4. Cold Chisell Aust- Khe San Cold Chisel Kah San

    5. Hunters and Collectors Aust- Throw your arms around me. Hunters and collectors throw your arms around me

Weber & I are SH born, whereas, as Mr Payne points out at his Boot Camps, you guys are hanging on to the other side!

Would have picked Simon straight away but I couldn't help but notice you're the good-looking movie star!

  14. Was going to wait for tomorrow for "B", but since it's tomorrow, today in the SH, I'll put this up before B-byes tonight:

B offers so much to choose from Beatles- tomorrow never knows from Revolver, Bachman Turner Overdrive- you ain't seen nothing yet, anything from Boston's eponymous first album, anything from Big Country's first album: The Crossing. But for a superb guitar riff I've gone back to 1973 for Budgie- Breadfan, anyone who thinks that Metallica's cover of this is better than the original is frankly wrong- go away and re-think your life.

    Check this riff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54H3EUAzpVg

The best guitar riff out of Wales ever.
    Chooooowwwwwwwwn!

    Excellent!
One of the comments on the Youtube clip was, "what a damn shame this band flew under the radar back in the day - the only radio program playing this stuff was the Friday rock show on radio 1 late on a friday night; with a bit more exposure they could have been massive."
...certainly flew under my radar! and apparently they're still touring, not sure same lead guitarist though?, mark

  16. Nice way to start the day.

  17. First heard this 1979 when my then best friend's big sister was really in to Budgie. It's a song that has been in my collection ever since. I'm really pleased you like it. We used to camp out in the back garden and listen to the Friday rock show, thinking how cool and grown up we were!

  18. B Was a hard one for me as well. Beatles was nearly in but decided to go a bit left field.

Butthole Surfers -Pepper - Butthole surfers you tube clip Pepper

I leave Bon Jovi for Ian if he gets around to his 5 favourate 80´s music moments. Come on Ian.

Also I had The breeders in but decided that The makes them In T

But they won´t be my T at this stage so here they are. The breeders Cannonball you tube clip

    Have a nice day people.

  19. Today´s Rock Trivia.....

Sweds love Europe and my dislike/hate for the band is on par with their love.

Anyway. Motörhead were in Sweden a little while ago and Ian Haugland from Europe was at a party ( he works in radio now) He went up to Lemmy and introduced himself. "Hi Lemmy ,I´m Ian Haugland from the rock band Europe " Lemmy looked at Ian and Said " Europe is not a Rock band" He then turned around and Ian walked off-

  20. Can I just check ahead of tomorrow's C posting are we going for the letter denoting the first name or surname in terms of solo artists? i.e. would John Lennon come under J or L

  21. A tricky question I would say J or L which ever you see fit, but as I said any band The .... should come under T, which means T will be a nightmare.

Thats what I think what do you think ?

Edit: but band name with more than 1 word it´s taken from the 1st word ie Boom Town Rats is a B.

  22. Personally, when I've used alphabetical order to organise my record collection I used the surname for solo artists and ignored "The". Your choice... I've got tons of "t's" to choose from.

Of note here is the book Hi-fidelity by Nick Hornby. The film did not do it justice- for starters they moved it from the UK to USA. Alphabetical organisation of records is not really cool! I spent my youth in record shops just like the one in the book where they would laugh at you if you asked for something "wrong" or refuse to sell you something if they didn't think you were worthy of it, however, they were also quick to praise when you made a selection which was sub-zero. Sadly none of them remain. Perhaps if the youth of today had to go up to the counter to ask for their music only to be laughed at, they may become better educated. i-tunes don't care if your music taste is ****e.

  23. So agreed surname for solo artists, the is in the T.

On a side note whats your favourate Music based film?

  24. OK, before we go any further:

Chuck Berry- Johnnie B. Goode- without whom we would not even be having this conversation, goes into the B's
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_Bd5-APPBw

Depends what you mean by music based film>Spinal Tap, Comic Strip presents Bad News, Quadrophenia, Tommy, Sound of music....

Are we now choosing fav artists by letter or are we still on rock artists?
    A - anything by AC/DC!
    B - early Black Sabbath
C - Anything by the Clash but also Catatonia Mulder & Scully (though Road Rage also great)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYsi3hcZSC0

I think I've caught up now:eek: By music films is this films with great sound track (Repoman) or specifically about the music?
    Wendy

  26. Correct Chuck Berry solo artist B.

I would class all of those a music based films.

  27. Welcome to the alphabet list Wendy nice one :D.

C was for tomorrow but as Simon pointed out it is the morning in the southern hemishere.

Also The Clash would go in the T section as in The Clashand solo artists go by there last name ( here end the rules)

I was thinking music based films. not just great sound tracks.

  28. Wendy, don't take this the wrong way but by mentioning repoman you've just become sub-zero in my opinion of you.

You can't have the clash as C because under Michael's rules "The" counts as "t"

  29. But she can have Catatonia Mulder & Scully which she listed I´ve got my D playing in the background. Too many memories

  30. Got my C band just picking which tune - The Mrs just came downstairs to protest- "how come you can play your music loud, but I can't play mine?"

    My response:

"because your taste in music is incredibly poor"

She got the message and went back upstairs.
Love you really Ali but Take That ain't gonna make it into my list.

Ok if we are going down the road of that catagory for music film would have to have West Side Story & Little Shop of Horrors (sorry if this offends but just love it) one problem with this catagory though is it might have to include Mamma Mia:eek:(not by me........had to watch it too many times!!!)
    Wendy

  32. From repoman to mama mia- eclectic!

  33. Mine must be Empire Records....Not so much for the quality but the memories of the 1st time I watched. Back in Uni days back in OZ from NZ on summer holidays went out Thursday night ended up sat morning with cola slushies and Jim beam to watch it. The memories or lack of them, also the last time I drank the sour mash come to think of it.

I Am going to upset a lot of people but I hate rock, heavy metal and female opera singers. However I love Queen, Lilly Allan" It's not fair" and Meat Loaf " Bat out of Hell".
Usless trivia : bob of boomtown rats fame used to play in our back garden and stole the wheels off my pram so he could make a go cart(i was still in the pram when he did it). My brothers best friend is Rory Gallaher's 1st cousin. And when I was young free and single, singing in a pub in Kerry in the south west of Ireland I spotted Jean Piere Reeves the french rugby international in the audience and for a request he kissed me!!! The song was "Trisha the stripper" by Chris de Burg

  35. YES but this bit below is pretty cool. Maybe you can start another thread with your style of music. Simon´s wife may join in from the sound of things :D

i think we're using a continuous rather than discrete sort of 'alfabet' ... it's all connected and one
