Twenty-nine male judocas and nontraining peers participated in this study. The arch of the foot (as Clarke's angular values) was measured under non-weight-bearing conditions in two-leg and one-leg stands. Postural balance was assessed by the Flamingo balance test. Judocas presented better static balance and higher arches of the foot. Significant differences in Clarke's angular values in a sitting and standing on two-leg position were found in both groups. After transition to a one-leg stand, the height of the arches of the foot in nontraining participants was still significantly decreased. Weight bearing did not affect Clarke's angular values in judokas. A correlation was found between the Flamingo test and Clarke's angle. Better balance was observed in adolescents with higher arch of the foot.

Background and Aim of the study. Many health problems are caused by a poor condition of foot arch. Foot arches of athletes are influenced by
injuries. Barefooted walk is recommended as a prevention of foot arch problems. That is why we chose judoka as tested persons because their
performance and training is always barefooted.
Materials and Methods. We used drop test to assess the dynamics of judoka?s foot arch. Our control group consists of nonathletic population (25
judoka, 25 nonathletes). We measured the length of the sole, height of os navicular in a sitting and standing position.
Results. The dynamics of Judoka?s right foot (average result of drop test 6.64 mm) is bigger than their left foot?s (6.0 mm). Foot arch?s drop of
nonathletes is less than half of judoka?s (2.62 mm of right foot, 3.54 left foot).
Conclusions. Practicing judo formulates the feet arches. There is a difference between right and left foot arch dynamics depending on the
preference guard in judo.

So, a 3-4mm difference (average) in the sit to stand navicular drop test with absolutely no mention of their reliability. In this context the conclusions made could be considered rather bold...

Toe Flexor Muscle Strength and Morphological Characteristics of the Foot in Judo Athletes.

Whether practicing in judo influences the muscle strength and morphological characteristics of the foot is unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine the toe flexor muscle strength and morphological characteristics of the foot in judo athletes. Judo athletes (JUDO, men=24) and age-, gender- and body mass-matched physically active healthy subjects (CON, men=24) were recruited, and their toe flexor strength and morphological characteristics of the foot were compared. The maximum isometric toe flexor strength and foot intrinsic muscle thicknesses were measured using a toe grip dynamometer and a B-mode ultrasound, respectively. Foot arch height was assessed as the distance between the navicular tuberosity of the foot and the floor in the sitting and standing positions. JUDO showed a significantly lower foot arch height and smaller foot arch index than CON, whereas foot length and muscle thickness did not significantly differ between groups. The toe flexor strength relative to total muscle thickness was significantly larger in JUDO than CON. The foot arch dynamics was significantly larger in JUDO than CON. This study suggests that exercise training specific to judo may affect the force-generating capacity, morphological structure and arch function of the foot.

The present study was undertaken to determine the anthropometric variables and lower extremity
anatomical alignments, those which have impact on the magnitude of navicular drop. 81 university level
female judo players of age group 18-25 years were selected purposively from different universities of
northern India for the study. Eleven selected parameters such as height, weight, Body Mass Index (BMI),
right total leg length, right lower leg length, right tibiofemoral angle, right femoral anteversion, right Qangle, right genu recurvatum, right tibial torsion, and right navicular drop were measured on each player
following standard techniques. Significant positive correlation of right ND was seen with weight, BMI,
right total leg length, right Q-angle, right genu recurvatum and right tibial torsion. Results concluded that
weight, BMI, total leg length, Q-angle, genu recurvatum and tibial torsion have significant impact on the
magnitude of static ND

Effectiveness of a judo-specific injury prevention programme: a randomised controlled trial in recreational judo athletes

Objectives To evaluate the effectiveness of a trainer-supervised judo-specific injury prevention warm-up programme on overall injury prevalence.

Methods We conducted a two-arm, cluster randomised controlled trial; the Injury Prevention and Performance Optimization Netherlands (IPPON) study. Judo athletes aged≥12 years were randomised by judo school to IPPON intervention or control group who performed their usual warm-up. Primary outcome was overall injury prevalence (%) over the follow-up period (16–26 weeks) measured fortnightly with the Oslo Sports and Trauma Research Centre Questionnaire. A modified intention-to-treat analysis was performed due to COVID-19, with estimates for the primary outcome obtained using generalised linear mixed models. Secondary outcomes included: prevalence of severe injuries, overall incidence, time-loss injuries, exposure, adherence and experiences of trainers and athletes.

Results 269 judo athletes (IPPON: 117, Control: 152) were included. Mean injury prevalence over 16–26 weeks was 23% (95% CI 20% to 26%) in the IPPON and 28% (95% CI 25% to 30%) in the control group. We observed no significant difference of all reported injuries (OR 0.72 in favour of the IPPON group; 95% CI 0.37 to 1.39). Secondary outcomes also demonstrated no significant differences between groups. Specifically, no significant difference of severe injuries was reported (OR 0.80 in favour of the IPPON group; 95% CI 0.36 to 1.78). All trainers and 70% of athletes perceived the IPPON intervention as successful.

Conclusion The IPPON intervention did not significantly reduce the overall and severe injury prevalence. Despite this, we suggest the IPPON intervention be considered as an useful alternative to regular judo warm-up, given the high adherence and the positive clinical experiences of trainers and athletes.
