I am about to start planning my Msc dissertation and was wondering what areas of foot and ankle surgery surgeons and/or pods think needs more research?

I had a short list of ideas from a conference I attended in Melbourne last year but have mispaced my paperwork, so thought it best to ask the people who do the job what they think.

I like the quote that is on Karl Marx's tombstone and was taken from the Thesis on Feuerbach:
This statement has been given many interpretations ---- my paraphrased interpretation is that too much research is based on describing the world and not enough on changing the world. Meaning: what ever you choose to research thing about what might have a potential to change clinical practice rather than doing something that just describes it (eg a prevalance study).

I was thinking of a comparative study on surgical technique, maybe looking at a standard practice for any surgical procedures in which there are a variety of methods.

Ideally I would like to compare the USA and/or Australia and the UK, maybe with a trip out to observe first hand ;)

I just read a study on outcomes of knee scope debridement for patients with a diagnosis of Degenerative arthritis. It showed the outcomes to be rather poor.

I have found the opposite with ankle scopes where the Dx is chronic synovitis from DJD.

Perhaps a study on Ankle scope outcomes based on post operative diagnosis.

Keep the ideas coming team as I’m also embarking on a Masters by Research (biomechanics focus) this year.

I had considered “relationships between foot strength and lower limb function”. Any lateral thinking from the community or wisdom from the seasoned researcher would be appreciated.:empathy:

  6. How do you measure: a) "foot strength"; b) "lower limb function" ?:bash:

    I thought of one more:

The relationship between the attractiveness of a drug rep. and the price of the drug.
