Aim of ayurveda is not only to treat the diseased but also to maintain the health of healthy
people. Ayurveda has also emhasised on daily regimen to maintain health. Ayurved principles
include all the physical and mental activities starting from waking up in the morning upto sleep
in night. Padadari which is a kshudra- rog has been first described in Sushruta samhita. Padadari
is included in ‘Kshudraroga’ only. In persons who are in the habit of too much walking on rough
ground without footwear, vata gets increased producing fissures in the sole of feet, this is called
Padadari. As per modern science it called as Crack heel, roughage. Padadari denotes
uncleanliness of sole. Disease ‘Padadari’ makes the sole rough & hampers beauty & smoothness
of foot. Ayurved has mentioned lots of remedies on such minor condition. Sarjaras Malahar
kalpana is one of the best remedy for padadari. The word Malahar is used for the preparation of
Malahar taila or ghrita, or wax etc. are used as base.

Introduction: Padadari (Cracked heels) is one of the commonly existing podiatric diseases in our society, which is basically caused by the habit of excessive walking that is often associated with excessive dryness leading to the cracking or splitting. Kokum butter oil extracted from the seeds of Vrukshamla (Garcinia indica Choisy.) is used by folklore Vaidyas in Western Ghats of India to treat Padadari, but no study has been documented till date regarding its efficacy in the management of the Padadari. The drug is available easily and used extensively in folk practice. Methods: The Vrukshamla beeja taila (VBT) was prepared by traditional seed-kernel boiling method and then given to 23 patients of Padadari, which were selected from out-patient and in-patient departments of SDM Hospital of Ayurveda, Udupi. It was given for external application on the site of lesion for twice a day that is morning and night before sleeping, for 15 days. Results: Except oozing, all assessment parameters were found to be statistically significant. Conclusion: The study revealed that the VBT a significant effect in the management of Padadari.

INTRODUCTION:
Ayurveda considers, Padadari (cracked feet) as disease condition, under Kshudra Kushtha (minor diseases of skin). Cracked feet also known as heel fissures is a common foot problem characterized by yellowish color of the skin on the heel of the foot, hard skin growth, hardening and cracks in the feet associated with pain, bleeding or itching. Vaidya Manorama, Ayurvedic compendia, recommended Snuhi oil as a remedy for Padadari. An open-labeled clinical trial has been conducted to evaluate the effect of Rakta Snuhi-based formulation in Padadari.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:
Snuhi oil was prepared by mixing Saindhava Lavana (Rock salt) 24 g; 300 ml latex of Rakta Snuhi (Euphorbia caducifolia); 4.8 l. of water, Sarshapa Taila (mustard oil) 1.2 l. and further heating of oil, following classical guidelines of Sneha Kalpana. For better acceptability, the medicated oil was then gradually mixed with "Aerosil," a thickener, for converting the mixture into gel form. Twenty-six patients, diagnosed with Padadari, were treated by applying 3 g (or as per requirement) of Rakta Snuhi Ksheera gel twice daily for 21 consecutive days.

RESULTS:
Response to the treatment was recorded on a weekly basis and therapeutic effect was evaluated through symptomatic relief.

CONCLUSION:
The study yielded statistically highly significant results in symptoms such as cracks associated with pain (P < 0.001), Rukshata (dryness) (P < 0.001) and Kandu (itching) (P < 0.001).

Someone the other day asked me if modern medicine and Ayurveda were the same? After a brief pause, I explained that the difference between Ayurveda and modern Allopathic medicine is quite simple. Allopathy primarily treats the symptoms of disease. Ayurveda however, treats the entire body as a whole entity, it is fundamentally about correcting and then maintaining balance physically and psychologically. It also plans regimes to keep those that are well healthy. Diet, herbs, meditation and yoga are some examples as to how it operates. Each type of medicine has its pros and cons and each person must choose what is best for him or her. Historically, the paths of both systems have on occasion overlapped. Hippocrates the father of modern medicine, was purported to have said :- “Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food."
