Asia now produces more shoes than any other region of the world. Often concerns are expressed as to the QA and finished product but it is reassuring to read this is changing. In Beijing this month, there was a meeting to discuss the standards examination and approval for children’s shoes. Participants included represetatives from the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA), the Leather and Footwear Industry Institute, National Center for Quality Supervision and Inspection of footwear, and CAS Institute of Physiochemical Technology. The focus of the meet was to establish clear standards for childrens’ shoes based upon scientific tests to ensure the shoes fully safeguarded normal growth of children’s bones, joints, ligaments etc. This information will maximise safety in childrens’ shoes and set the regulated standard for the Chinese leather footwear market. Other aspects under discussions at the same seminar included ways by which to obviate certain bacilli in footwear liner and raw materials. These revised industrial standards will now be submitted to the National Development and Reform Commission (NDCR) for approval.

Not to say all manufacturers will comply but most certainly the authorities are taking seriously the need to set and uphold world class standards.
