Patient's complaint against NHS Lothian upheld

A PATIENT'S complaint against health body NHS Lothian has been upheld after he suffered "extreme discomfort" at Liberton Hospital.

The patient, who was identified only as Mr C, was admitted to the Edinburgh hospital in June 2006 following a stroke, and he suffered some paralysis and speech problems.

He was referred to a podiatrist because he had problems with both his big toes, which he thought were ingrowing.

Mr C said pain relief was neither discussed or offered, and due to his speech and mobility issues, he could not pull away or talk during the treatment.

He said he experienced a "great deal of pain, which could have been avoided had the podiatrist taken the trouble to speak to him or take his recent medical history into account".

Scotland's public services ombudsman, Professor Alice Brown, said: "An independent podiatrist told me it was reasonable to expect the treatment given to Mr C would be uncomfortable for some people and especially those who had suffered a stroke, as they could be subject to a reduced pain threshold."
