But what I would like attend would be a clinical orthotic manufacturer boot camp. Where new materials, positive cast modifying, discussion of physics of orthotic design, CAD/CAM etc etc.
Quite hands on, be great for pod who make their own devices and those interested in what goes on into making the device they order, discussion of new techniques, ideas etc. It would assume a certain knowledge and get right into it....
I´m throwing this out there and there is one person (not me).
That jumps off the member list in the UK that I recon could run it, but they may not want to. So will not name names.
Does anyone else feel it´s a missing point in Pod related CPD or is there such a course and I missed it ?
Mike, if you pay my travel and expenses, I'll come to Stockholm and give you a 1:1 practical workshop on orthosis manufacture.
I'll also have a chat with Paul Fenelon, the owner of Langer and see if we could put something on at their factory in North Staffs purely on manufacturing techniques.
Afraid not. However, if you are a `valued customer` of Langer, they are offering 20% discount until the end of Jan.
According to their website, lectures are scheduled for the mornings followed by an opportunity to get up close & personal with the speakers during the practical workshops. Whatever that means.
Would love too I´ll get a lotto ticket for the weekend, or I can come to see you ;).
Sorry if people have got the wrong end of the stick - orthotic manufacturing techniques was what I was after. Well put Simon.
Both CAD and manual was where I was coming from, heating of different material discussion of mills etc etc. People who make there own orthotics having some specific CPD days.
I've done this kind of thing before for NHS units. It has to be small numbers to make it worthwhile. But basically making devices of all shapes and sizes for a couple of days.
You need a big enough lab to accommodate everyone working simultaneously, my set up here wouldn't handle it- it's built for one- me. Maybe, Rob can provide a venue at his NHS lab and we could do our now famous double act? Or he could put something on for you himself. Too many cooks and all that.
What do you think Isaac's?
They want to know how to make orthotics all by themselves.
While looking at the summer school programme I noticed that Langer have an open day in April with that sort of thing - presumably just their own products, but maybe worth a look?!
CPD days do sound good.. what about having them in Edinburgh and for minimum cost?!
Lucy, you organise the venue, you'll need to find somewhere with lab facilities and I'll be happy to come and do some stuff for you and a handful of colleagues for relatively low cost per head- how does that sound?
Had this response from Head of Pod @QMU - bit disappointed...
I actually wonder if we can help in that we have moved away from filling casts and no longer use plaster and ovens etc.
We now tend to use more off the shelf devices as that is in the main the way the profession has moved. While you can buy in plaster etc for your group, we are unable to supply ovens for the day.
this does sound like an absolutely fabulous idea... but it seems like its going to be in the UK... a little bit too far for me to travel. do you think there would be something in Australia along similar lines???
