This idea occurred to me the other day. Some patients suffer with painful involuted toenails.

Later in life they may acquire fungal nail infections, making the nails crumbly and discoloured. These nails "fall away " and are thus not uncomfortable any longer.

The fungal nail colonistaion has had a positive effect - no pain and no risks associated with nail surgery !!
