    Hi guys,

I've cleverly developed what I've self diagnosed as a ganglion cyst, below my first finger..
And to be honest, I'm a bit worried as I've only been in practice for a year and a half.. has anyone else had this and can give me reassurance that I'm not going to have to stop doing pod work properly before I've truly got started??

Really this is just a moan on a Saturday night to avoid X Factor..

    Thanks for listening!

I have had two on my 4th and 5th fingers in the last 14 years of practice. Had one pop when I hit a door frame (by accident) with my hand and the other was done with a needle. Neither has impacted my practicing.

When I was in High School I was on the crew team. I developed a ganglion at the base of my second finger. Pulling on an oar every day really started to bother it. I went to the pediatrician and he grabbed my hand and gave it a firm squeeze and it popped. It hurt for half a day and has never come back. I've rowed a lot since then. One interesting thing about the encounter was how proud the pediatrician was of himself. I was taller than him, and looking down at him he had this be grin on his face after it popped. I've thought back to that moment several times when I've done something simple for a patient that solves their problem.

    Hi Lucy,

A number of years ago I developed ganglions on the back of both wrists which really started to limit extension at the wrist joints. I was booked in for surgery on the left ganglion but when I presented for surgery, it had been smashed during a basketball game a week beforehand. Consequenly, I had the right wrist operated on (excision of the approx 10mm ganglion) and spent 2 weeks if I recall in a backslab cast before a period of rehabilitation. Neither has returned in the past 15 years and I don't feel it has impacted on my clinical work.

    Good luck!

    Adam.
