    Hi All

I have been approached by a major 3rd party insurance funder of podiatric care and foot orthoses provision to provide professional opinion regarding what constitutes custom foot orthoses. Particularly they request opinion of value of using systems which claim to create custom foot orthoses derived from pressure mat data and the legitimacy of the implication that this somehow an improvement of "traditional" methods which involve capturing foot shape.

I have attempted to clarify the issues around this for an insurance policy maker rather than a clinically informed reader. To achieve this I have written a document to encapsulate the reasoning for foot orthoses use generally and what this amounts to in terms of how diagnosis of foot pathology, prescription, fabrication and review of foot orthoses function integrate. The request was not for rigorously referenced scientific paper but a concise report understandable by non clinician about what the current state of evidence based medicine informs us.

There have been some brief threads around this topic on pod-arena but I am unaware that anyone have created a definitive document for this purpose.

I have attached my draft document and with collaboration from anyone interested hope to refine this to be as meaningful as possible and invite critique from this group to that end. Please feedback strengths weaknesses and specific recommendations for change.

    Thanks in anticipation.

    Cheers

    Martin
