Paramedic suspended for inappropriate behaviour towards students

Paramedic Tony Mountain has been suspended from the HCPC Register for misconduct resulting from inappropriate behavior toward his students whilst working as a training officer for the London Ambulance Service.

A panel of the HCPC Conduct and Competence Committee heard that Tony Mountain shouted and swore at students under his supervision and breached confidentiality by reading out a student’s reflective diary in front of other students. Tony Mountain also exhibited inappropriate behaviour toward female students, including pinching students’ arms while they driving, pretending to burn them with cigarettes and stroking one student’s shoulder whilst saying words to the effect of “you’re mine now”.

The Panel further heard that Tony Mountain fell asleep in a service vehicle when he was responsible for supervising students. He also swore at other road users and pedestrians and did not stop for a pedestrian attempting to flag down the training vehicle for a man who was visibly bleeding.

Panel Chair Ray Pattison commented:

“As a very experienced trainer in a position of responsibility he was under a duty to set a good example to his students but failed to do so and his behavior severely inhibited their learning experience. The findings of misconduct which have been made are wide-ranging and serious covering several different dates with (on one occasion) a direct risk to service users.

“He abused his position and intimidated the three students under his supervision. His behaviour towards them was highly inappropriate and unpleasant, particularly in respect of the two female students.”

The Panel decided the most appropriate action was to suspend Tony Mountain from the Register for a period of 12 months with an Interim Suspension Order in place to cover the appeal period.

Tony Mountain was not present or represented at the hearing.
