Hi, Does anyone use a Conmed Hyfrecator? I have a second hand one that works but no user manual. I have looked at UTUBE to see some users, but are there any training courses in this type of electrotherapy or modules that cover its usage? Also is LA needed to treat a VP? Very interested in incorporating into VP and other uses. Any help or advice please?

 

In the '70's I used a Ritter hyfrecator extensively for eradication of plantar warts. About 1979 I largely gave up their treatment as I had decided that routine treatment was not ethically correct (though still a role for the odd one). It was very effective - and YES, it does need local analgesia!

 

Have you tried contacting Conmed directly? I have used Conmed and Ritter (I didn't notice a clinical difference in results) but definitely agree with Rob - you will not get to the base of the lesion without anaesthetic - unless you have a patient with an extraordinarily high pain threshold!

Back in the day I used something that looked like a kid's toy telephone - was that a Ritter? Chief feature that I remember was a mild shock from the lead if it touched your arm during the procedure.

Highly effective, yes you need to administer LA before the procedure, and there is usually a strong smell of burning, and a smoke plume.

 

.....and recurrence of the lesion(s) as the latent viral particles in the basal layer are not addressed.

 

Hi thanks for reply, I thought it may be another treatment for persistent VP and wondered if suitable patient would like LA as well as the burning out part! I have been asked a few times for such procedure... and if it would remove hyper granulation tissue on cryptoctic nail conditions?

 

Blinda, quite right.
Tracy, the hyfrecator will remove hypergran, but nowhere near as successfully or quickly as a pair of forceps.

Thanks all for the information, just hoping that it could be used as another armoury against the verrucae . I will see if anyone wants to buy the machine!! I will stick to the other evidence based methods.
