I have been contacted by a friend of a friend who runs a community organisation for a specific ethnic group. They have about 60 clients who they service and are looking for a podiatrist to do home visits. They have offered me this opportunity.

Now I have no idea where to start. I do not own any instruments and am not sure what steps I need to take to set this all up.

    Does the following sound correct:
    - Set up ABN
    - Get provider number from Medicare
    - Professional Indemnity insurance
    - Purchase instruments / dressings / PPP etc. etc.

How does it work after that? Once I have all the above completed, do I call up each client and offer them an appt? Do I charge the client or the organisation? How much do I charge?

I feel so far out of my depth here and any help is greatly appreciated.

Best to ask the people who want to use you.. If you are a member of your society then they should provide insurance with membership.
Although they look after 60 people, it maybe that only a small proportion, maybe 6 of them, will need a podiatrist. If they only need to see you occasionally then you may not get all that much business.
Do they have a suitable clean room to which the patients could come to you rather than home visiting?
Will the patients pay you individually, or will the organisation pay you a sessional fee - per 3 hours for example.
Until you get established, it might be easier to buy disposable instruments, so as to avoid the need for sterilising equipment etc.
    Good luck

  3. Hey ThrowawayPod (if that is your real name... ;) )...

Sounds like a really fascinating opportunity you've got! I really admire your passion for the chance to be working with a minority community.

I know it's been a few months since your original post - how's the project going?

I wanted to suggest coreplus as online software to help you securely manage your client's records, & to manage your appointments & scheduling.

Your client organisation could be set up with an account to add appointments to your schedule - if you needed them to.

If you're just getting started with your practice - from only $5 per month, per practitioner, our Basic Plan gives you everything you need to get started:
    • Help & support (live chat, email, phone & online help centre)
    • Calendar / appointments
    • Secure client records
    • File storage (to upload attachments to client records)
