Impact of Malocclusions on Foot Function

Supination of one foot is the hallmark of a descending occlusal-foot link: the malocclusion shifts one foot into supination

Stabilizing the malocclusion (typically with an ALF), repositions the supinated foot.

The animation below demonstrates this link.

• Pre Dental Intervention: Standing on his S3 proprioceptive insoles, the right foot is supinated
• Post Dental Intervention: Standing on the same insoles, the right foot is no longer supinated

 

Below is the reference on a research study linking malocculsions to foot posture.
Ignoring this link, in my opinion, is malfeasance at best, malpractice at worst.

I find it disappointing that this important relationship is almost ignored in the Podiatric literature.
Example: Gravity drive (abnormal) pronation is linked to Class II Occlusions. Understanding this link, how could any practitioner, in good conscious, use a lateral wedge to treat knee pain.

Again, just food for thought.
