Apologies, I'm not a foot care professional; I'm professor of the study of religions at University College Cork, Ireland; this is a temporary visit to the site after my wife's podiatrist kindly suggested I consult the worldwide experts on podiatry-arena with the following question:

I'm researching a 'lost' Irish Buddhist monk, famous throughout S-E Asia a hundred years ago. His Buddhist name was U Dhammaloka. There are conflicting accounts about when he became a monk (and so went barefoot). Some say as early as the1880s, others as late as 1900. 20 years difference.
The attached photo shows him in Burma in 1902, and I would be very grateful if you can look at the state of his feet and tell me whether, in your opinion, he'd been walking barefoot for 20 years, or just 2 years?
All opinions gratefully received, after which I will politely withdraw from podiatry-arena and leave it to you specialists!
Kind regards
Brian Bocking
PS If you're interested in more about U Dhammaloka there's a brief youtube video about him http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mUil5bVPsI and there's also a wikipedia entry at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U_Dhammaloka
