    Dear all,
Is there any data that anyone is aware of as to the number of orthotics that are prescribed by our profession(Pods), compared with other professions eg. physio's, chiro's and...er, sports shoe shops etc, etc?
I fear I'm developing a case of orthotic prescription envy.

    cheers,
    Nathan

    Hi there,

If it's any indication, a great deal of physios are advertising their ability to prescribe orthotics...

I work within a physiotherapy clinic where they have a quarterly newsletter, which is a generic 4 page folded publication called "Your Physiotherapist Practice Newsletter", current issue has articles on "how to get fit and lose weight", "7 ways you can take better care of your back", "healing after an injury" etc etc...and it is personalised by printing the practice details and news on a narrow column front and back...

Anyways, on the back page is printed in a small blue text box:
"Do you need Orthotics?: If you have biomechanical problems with your feet, orthotics (shoe inserts) can help realign your feet to take the pressure off your joints and soft tissues. Ask the physiotherapists at this clinic to assess you. We can help arrange either off the shelf or custom made orthotics."

I'm not sure the scope of physios who would use this newsletter, but it seems like a fairly mass produced publication... by the way the physios that I work with don't prescribe orthotics themselves, they refer to me for that... :D

Maybe contacting the different associations (physio, chrio etc) might turn up some further info?

    Regards

    Donna :)

Foot orthoses are well within the scope of practice of many professions.
