BACKGROUND:
National orthopaedic meetings are used to disseminate current research through podium and poster abstract presentations. Not all of these abstracts go on to full-text journal publication. The purpose of this study was to determine the publication rates of podium and poster presentations from the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) annual meetings between 2008 and 2012.
METHODS:
All accepted podium and poster abstracts from the 2008-2012 AOFAS annual meetings were compiled from the AOFAS office, Physician Resource Center website, and hardcopy meeting programs. PubMed and Google Scholar searches were performed for journal publications using key words in the presentation abstracts and authors' names. Full-text journal publication rates for the presentations were calculated per year, as were the most common journals of publication.
RESULTS:
Overall full-text publication rate was 73.7% for podium presentations and 55.8% for posters. Podium presentations were published in a journal significantly more often than posters ( P < .0001; odds ratio 2.17 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.64-2.86]). The mean time to publication was 1.5 and 1.4 years for podium and poster presentations, respectively ( P = .124). The most common journal for podium and poster publications was Foot & Ankle International.
CONCLUSION:
Podium abstracts were significantly more likely to be published compared to posters. The AOFAS overall full-text journal publication rate was one of the higher reported rates compared with other national orthopedic society meetings, which have ranged from 34% to 73%.

Highlights
•One measure of the scientific value of a meeting is the publication rate of presentations. Previous studies have shown that for Orthopaedic national meetings, the publication rate ranges from 26.6–68.1%.
•In the current study, a total of 341 papers were presented, with an overall publication rate of 31.7%. Of 251 clinical papers, 200 were case series (79.6%).
•68 out of 201 (33.8%) podium presentations and 40 out of 140 (28.6%) poster presentations were published.
•Overall, 321 abstracts were conducted at units within the UK, in comparison to 20 international abstracts, with publication rates of 30.2% and 55% respectively (p = 0.021). Non-UK based abstracts had a 2.8 times greater likelihood of publication.
•Arthroscopic surgery had significantly increased publication rates compared with other areas.
•The rate of publication of basic science papers was significantly greater than clinical papers, with rates of 45.9% and 31.6% respectively, p = 0.004. Basic science papers had 1.84 times greater chance of publication.

Aims
The aim of the current study was to determine the full text publication rate of papers presented at the annual BOFAS meeting and factors associated with publication success.

Methods
A database was created of all abstracts presented at BOFAS meetings from 2009 to 2013. Computerised searches were performed using PubMed and Google search engines.

Results
In total 341 papers were presented, with an overall publication rate of 31.7%. Of 251 clinical papers, 200 were case series (79.6%). Factors associated with publication success included basic science studies, papers related to arthroscopic surgery and research performed outside the UK.

Conclusion
A relatively low conversion rate from presentation to publication could be as a result of papers failing to pass the scrutiny of peer review, or that the work is never formally submitted for publication. The information from this study could be used to prioritise future research and promote higher quality research.

The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) annual conference has served as a premiere platform to disseminate the latest innovations and research in the field of foot and ankle surgery. The quality of national society conferences is often assessed indirectly by analyzing the the journal publication rate of the abstracts presented. The purpose of this retrospective study was to assess the journal publication rate for abstracts (oral manuscripts and posters) accepted for presentation at the ACFAS conference from 2010 to 2014. All accepted abstracts from this period were compiled by the ACFAS office. PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus searches were performed using abstract titles and author names. Overall, the journal publication rate was 76.9% (83 of 108) for oral manuscripts and 23.2% (258 of 1113) for poster abstracts. The mean time to publication was 9.6 (range 0 to 44) months and 19.8 (range 0 to 66) months for oral and poster abstracts, respectively. The most common journal for abstract publication was The Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery. Notably, the ACFAS oral manuscript publication rate from 2010 to 2014 (76.9%) exceeded its previously reported rate from 1999 to 2008 (67.5%) and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society podium publication rate from 2008 to 2012 (73.7%). To the best of our knowledge, the publication incidence for oral abstracts presented at the ACFAS conference is now the highest reported of any national foot and ankle society conference to date.

Factors Associated With the Journal Publication of Oral Abstracts From the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons: 2010 to 2014

The oral abstract publication incidence (76.9%) of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) is currently the highest reported for any national foot and ankle society conference to date. However, factors associated with the conversion of an abstract to a journal publication (JP) remain undetermined. The purpose of the present study was to identify the factors associated with the JP and time to publication for oral abstracts from the ACFAS conference from 2010 to 2014. Databases containing information on the abstracts were procured, and predictor variables were categorized as abstract or author specific. Bivariate analysis was conducted using the Mann-Whitney U test, Fisher's exact test, chi-square test of independence, or Spearman's rank correlation. Multivariable logistic regression and generalized linear regression models were utilized to analyze predictor variables. Oral abstracts by authors without a formal research degree were >12 times (95% confidence interval 2.25 to 71.67) more likely to achieve JP compared to abstracts by authors with a research degree. The author-specific variable was the only significant predictor of future JP (p = .002); however, trends with respect to other variables (funding, prior publications, and ACFAS regional division) were also identified. Abstracts originating from academic institutions (p = .042) and those involving fewer centers (p = .03) were associated with a significantly shorter time to publication. Although the present study broadens our understanding on the publication incidence and time to publication for oral abstracts from the ACFAS from 2010 to 2014, it remains unclear why almost a quarter of the abstracts accepted ultimately failed to achieve JP. Identifying the publication barriers of those abstracts remains a necessary first step in helping to form recommendations aimed at improving the future publication incidence for oral abstracts presented at the ACFAS conference.

Background: The quality of national society conferences is often assessed indirectly by analyzing the journal publication rates for the abstracts presented. Studies have reported rates from 67.5% to 76.7% for oral abstracts and 23.2% to 55.8% for poster abstracts presented at national foot and ankle society conferences. However, no study has evaluated the abstract to journal publication rate for the American Podiatric Medical Association's (APMA's) annual conference.

Methods: All presented abstracts from the 2010 to 2014 conferences were compiled. PubMed and Google Scholar searches were performed, and the number of abstracts presented, publication rate, mean time to publication, and most common journals of publication were determined. These results were then compared with those for the 2010 to 2014 American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons' conferences.

Results: Of 380 abstracts presented, 142 (37.4%) achieved publication, most often in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association. The oral abstract publication rate was 45.2% (14 of 31), with a mean time to publication of 24.2 months (range, 0–47 months). The poster publication rate was 36.7% (128 of 349), with a mean time to publication of 16.3 months (range, 0–56 months). Significant differences were identified between the two societies.

Conclusions: The overall abstract to journal publication rate for the 2010 to 2014 APMA conferences was 37.4%, and, expectedly, oral abstracts achieved publication more often than posters. Moving forward, a concerted effort between competing societies seems necessary to increase research interest, institutional support, and formal mentorship for future generations of foot and ankle specialists.

Barriers to Full Text Journal Publication of Abstracts Presented at Annual AAOMS Meetings.

PURPOSE:
The purpose of the present study was to identify the perceived barriers to full-text journal publication (JP) from abstracts presented at the 2010-2013 American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) meetings.

METHODS AND MATERIALS:
In the present cross-sectional study, all unpublished AAOMS abstracts (n = 473) from the temporal period were procured using a database from a previous publication. An online questionnaire was then distributed to the primary or secondary author for whom an e-mail address was available through the AAOMS Member Directory (n = 260) to assess 1) the current publication status of the abstract; and 2) the perceived barriers to JP. The responses were summarized with descriptive statistics.

RESULTS:
Of the 260 authors surveyed, 51 responded, for a response rate of 19.6%. At the time of the survey, 66.7% of the authors stated that submission for JP had not been pursued, and 15.7% stated that the abstract had achieved JP. However, no citations were provided. Overall, a low perceived priority (52.9%), insufficient time (50%), methodologic limitations (23.5%), and inadequate institutional support (17.6%) were the 4 primary reasons cited by the authors for the failure to pursue or achieve JP.

CONCLUSIONS:
JP of abstracts presented at the annual AAOMS meeting is very low, with many barriers to JP of presented abstracts.
