Hello podiatry arena,

I am a podiatrist in West Virginia, USA. We currently don't take credit cards due to costs associated with that. But, lately we are getting people with health savings accounts and patients want to use a credit card associated with this account and we can't take it.

I was looking into options and heard of a device called "square." Website for this is square.com. It's a little card reader you plug into a headphone jack on an ipad. This scans the credit card and the $ goes to your bank account. There's a 2.25% charge per transaction or $250 a month fee to use it which seems reasonable. Patient's can sign their name on the ipad too if needed for the credit card.

has anyone else used this device in their medical office? Does it work with health savings accounts? Are there other options for taking credit cards in your office? Thanks for the help.

I have newly started my own clinic and used to take just cash and cheques but with the iZettle reader that I now use I can take both credit and debit cards. The beauty is that if my patients want to use this facility I pass the charge on as I explain I dont do enough transactions to warrant a full credit card facility. No one as yet refused as there is a choice of options.

Its a similar % as above poster pays (on £30 it is approx 90p). The iZettle transaction pays into my bank account within a couple of days.

I couldn't survive without a credit card machine in my office. We take VISA, MC, Am Express and ATM cards. In addition, the credit card machine I have also scans checks which are automatically deposited for us and has totally eliminated "bounced checks". You should be able to get the costs down by doing some shopping for the best deals. I would think a dedicated credit card machine that deposits directly into your bank account makes the most sense for a doctor's office, not an "I-Pad scanner". If you are a Costco member, they do have a fairly good deal (through Elavon) and that is the one I use.
