Hi there are many avenues for CPD. Your State Assoc and Australian Council run Seminars, webinars etc. Portal is another avenue. Check out the Conferences listed on this site as well. Special interest groups run meetings as well.
CPD is not scarey it is an exciting opportunity to keep up with you colleagues, often networking and enjoying the social aspcets at the same time.
Cheers -
The American Podiatric Medical Association National Scientific conference is good for up to about 20 contact hours.
The conference costs are MUCH less than in OZ and are in such great places ( for some R&R after)
I think 2014 is in Hawaii. This year is Boston, we went to Seattle last year.
Presentations go for about an hour or so not like the 10 minute ones we have here.
The Trade show will just blow your mind. There has to be 100s' of stands of good stuff to look at and play with.
Have a look at the web site www.apma.org and check out "The National"
Membership is good value even if just for the JAPMA mag.

Like you dont know how they will allocate CPD points and if they will accept such things etc... -

The PBA don't allocate the CPD points, as we don't collect points, just the 20 hours

I know the requirements but Im uneasy as its not black and white... I mean what evidence do I need to provide to show that I meant the requirement or objective... I.e if I have a student in the practice (for example) do I need a letter from the university, do I have to write a page of notes describing what was happening, like what do they want etc its all a little vague I do understand that CPD has to be open ended but its scary.... I mean you get deregistered :O
Also where does it say - you just need to keep a diary note of the 1st 10 hours?
Thanks Mate :D -
If you have a student, there should be some form of communication with the Uni to include, a conference reciept shows you paid for a conference or seminar, case conference protocols and meeting dates with attendance records are a form of evidence, and for self directed learning like PA, you are only allowed 10hrs, hence the need to only record the 1st 10. The idea of the CPD is to record what you are already probably doing. I currently average around 20hrs a month of CPD type activities just doing my job. Student supervision, attending case conference, regular auditing, reading journals, presenting to groups of health professional, and involvement in professional activities. I use a speadsheet to record the activity and its outcomes, and if they choose to audit me and want substantiation, that sits in a folder on the PC (I scan stuff in that isn't already electronic). It isn't hard, nor is it meant to be hard -
Hi all,
One of the advantages of the APMA "National" is that you have to swipe your conference registration card after each sesson.
After the conference will APMA send you a statement with the number of actual contact hours, that you accumulated at the conference. You then have your "hard evidence" that you were actually at the sessions. Plus you will also have your session notes.
Some, or all the hours can then be claimed in your CPD requirement.

Hi Stephen
Thanks for all the CPD info. Can you just clarify exactly when the 20 hours CPD has to be completed by.
Ms H -
If you registered during the last 12 months it will be pro-rata. -
There are plenty of ways to get your points up...
I was randomly audited by Medicare in the middle of this yr. They sent out a list of patient names and I had to provide copies of the referrals & the letters to GP's. It was really quite easy to do because we keep a good track of that anyway...However, my point is that I have counted that as 10hrs towards the Quality Improvement section for my CPD this yr. I saw it mentioned in the recent ApodA newsletter as an example and realised that it counts....You don't have to have Medicare come along an audit you - you can do your own audit. Go through all your patient files from a certain month, make sure all the referral details are correct and the letters were all done properly, correct any issues that come up, report it all to your staff and log it down. 10hrs done easy!
I think the 5 hrs for Community Service/Volunteering is easy to do as well....go visit some Senior Citz clubs around your area and give them a talk about podiatry for an hour. You usually score morning tea scones out of that one!
The ApodC website is good with the online platform thing...you can read an article, do a little questionnaire and that gives you acknowledged points for self-directed learning.
And then there's always a conference to go to somewhere...

Oh, I see the free content now, goodo!

PORTAL always have free content going on - a few months back PORTAL broadcast Dr David Armstrong LIVE from Amsterdam to Ontario via Facebook for free as well as a ton of other free videos on site (over 400hrs I think). -

Above is a online PD for hand washing
You can print out a certificate at the end -
I am a new grad too and can someone tell me when re-registering do they require a copy of your log book?
Also great advice, I am heading to portal now. Thanks. -
You just need to 'declare' that you have completed the CPD etc. when renewing.
The board will then audit some pods to check they have complied.
So you need a copy of your CPD log, but the board doesn't. -
Thanks Stephen
-
REALLY helpful guys,
I was finding it all new and somewhat a bit stressful as I didn't realise all the options all of you have suggested.
Thanks -
for www.portaleducation.com , those "on demand" videos, what do you guys think they would go in:? criteria 2 , or criteria 5?
-
With Portal Education, I have found the free videos do NOT track...can we still document which videos we have watched and does it still count?
Thanks -
i would think it still counts?
I guess as long as you are taking notes?? -
in which case , hand in your notes , etc etc.
i don't think the podiatry board would expect everyone to be on teh "same level" , some people would have less notes than others... put it down to ... "difference in learning capabilities" ;)
