You might be interested to learn about a major result arising from the EC funded A-FOOTPRINT project (www.afootprint.eu). Yesterday the Glasgow-Maastricht Foot Model was released by the AnyBody Technology Group (www.anybodytech.com). This model is being used within the project to better understand foot function and personalised orthotic prescription. The model was developed by Glasgow Caledonian University and the University Hospital Maastricht in collaboration with the AnyBody group. The project result has raised interest in the mainstream media including the BBC (www.bbc.co.uk/news/health).

Jim, what can you do with your model?

 

Dear Simon,
Thank you for your interest. Within the AFOOTPRINT project the new model will be used to validate novel AFO and FO designs on the basis of optimising muscle forces and joint forces and moments. Outside the EU project we are undertaking basic studies investigating joint and soft-tissue damage associated with inflammatory arthritis, our main area of work. More widely the model has attracted interest from the orthopaedic joint replacement and sports and therapeutic footwear sectors.
The model can be driven by plantar pressure data and scaled using surface anthropometrics so a lot of effort has been invested in moving this closer to the clinical community.

How do you do that if you are driving the model via plantar pressure data only?

Is the model open access then, like the models and simulations here: http://opensim.stanford.edu/ ?

 

Dear Simon,
AnyBody Technology (ABT) presented two webcasts of the model yesterday. These will be available to view at http://www.anybodytech.com/index.php?id=196 shortly. The webcast best explains the approach with a working model which I can't easily do in type here. To your second question, ABT is an SME and the AnyBody Modelling system is their main product. So unlike OpenSim this is not an open platform system.
