Hi I currently work for nhs but thinking on starting doing some private home visits, only problem is I need a way to sterilise my instruments. Not going to be doing very much private what would be my best option second hand or enigma or any other suggestions. I live in north east Scotland

 

There are still pods and FHPs who 'cook' their instruments for 1 hour at 140C in a regular oven.

I scrub, with 58% ammonium quad, ('hospital grade' disinfectant) cook for 1 hour at 140C, then using tongs, bag and cook bagged for 1 hour at 140C. I now have my own autoclave, 2nd hand for £1000.oo went halves with another practitioner.

No hassle and for the amount you are going to be using, not too environmentally unfriendly

 

When I opened a private clinic- I needed a basic autoclave and was lucky enough to purchase one from the dental department at one of our main hospitals. They were upgrading, and the machines were surplus. And it was my mum who found it- have to give her the credit. It was a steal. The business outgrew it, but it was good for 5 sets at any one time. Sometimes you can find what you need from the most unlikely of sources. I sold it online later for a good price. If you want an autoclave, you can find good basic ones on the market, but you have to search.

Perhaps consider talking to your podiatry manager/ Allied Health manager (or equivalent and ask if you could utilise their autoclave (or autoclave in podiatry dept) (hopefully they have one).

Whilst working in community health years ago, I started some part-time work in private practice and did not own an autoclave. I approached the manager at the community health and asked if I could make use of the autoclave. I supplied my own Sonidet (detergent), sterilization pouches, autoclave log book, and instruments (of course) and offered to top up the water in the sterilizer once in a while. I assured the manager I would not use clinic time to arrange sterilisation of my instruments, but would rather use my lunch time. After hearing my request, she asked me to put it in writing, and then agreed to it.

Once this had been arranged, I informed my colleagues and told them I had received permission. I actually even offered to contribute to the electricity bill, but as the electricity consumption was minimal and difficult to monitor, I was told not to worry about it.

I continued using the autoclave at the clinic for approx 18 months, before finally moving into the private sector

If you don't ask, you'll never know. All they can say is "No"

Definitely buy a second hand one, but calibrated , tested, etc- from a reputable seller.
MUCH cheaper than having sterilised by external company , or buying a new autoclave!

 

I brought a Podiaclave with printer last year for £950 plus VAT from Chiropody Express tel 01484 717999
It is great, really easy to use and small enough to hide in a cupboard when not in use.
Chiropody Express are really friendly and a great source of advice if you don't know what you need.
PS I don't work for them, I am a Dom Pod from Sunny Bournemouth!!!

 

I live just north of Aberdeen, near Inverurie and I have an unwanted Little Sister 2 which is available FOC if you can collect. I haven't used it for some time but it was fully serviceable when last operated. Let me know if you are interested.
