    Hi

I wonder if anyone could advise on pressure vessel insurance for a bench top autoclave. I understand this is a legal requirement.

    Many thanks

    Hello Skigirl

    :welcome:

I would suggest that you contact your professional organisation, as they would be best placed to help you with this, and advise you on current legislation

Yes, it is a legal requirement if you are operating any pressure vessel.

    Legal requirement ?

The relevant HSE advice is that you 'should', not 'must', have third party indemnity in case of injury caused by failure of the device.

If a patient develops an infection from autoclave failure or it explodes and injures a third party, you will be liable. It makes sense therefore to be insured unless you can afford to stand an action for damages without insurance !

The requirement is that you have pressure vessel written scheme of examination, especially if it is a steam pressure system. This is usually sourced via your insurance provider since it cannot be written by anyone who supplies, manufactures or operates the pressure device.

    Hello

Thanks for your replies. Would this be the Pressure Vessel Inspection Certificate which is an annual requirement along with the normal annual testing for autoclaves?

I have the prestige classic 2100.

    Many thanks

    Hello Skigirl,
As I said in post2# your professional organisation are the best people to advise you on this as they provide your medical malpractice and public liability insurance.

In the unfortunate event of litigation you would be judged against the Best Practice recommended by your professional body, so it is important that you ascertain what this is and adhere to it.

    regards

This is done annually and is a legal requirement. The cost is circa.£100.
Ensure you have a Written Scheme of Examination for your autoclave.
