hello there

i am just about to set up my new podiatry practice soon in england and am just researching or asking which companys people use for collecting there clinical waste ?
is it a costly business doing this ? and how often it needs to be collected as just starting dont really think i need it weekly so can it be collected on a monthly or quartly basis ?

some other podiatrist i do know dont even have there waste collected , is this legal ?
or does it depend on the type of waste (not including sharps of course)

would be interested in peoples experienced knowledge in this area

Hi Eve,

Try your council or local authority. They often have an 'environmental waste dept' or similar and you can contract with them for (usually) monthly collection. They charge so much a bag, so much a sharps container.

They also service vets, dentists, folks with incontinence, etc.

They should give you a receipt when they collect and undertake to incinerate within x hours of collection.

There are private companies Biffa, PHS, etc but their charges tend to be higher.

I use my local councils waste collection service for sharps, yellow bag clinical waste & also a trade waste bin for other items. The trade bin is emptied weekly & sharps & yellow bag collections are arranged as I need them.

According to my local council any waste generated by a business is classified as trade waste & an individual or company could potentially be fined for disposing of such items via a domestic bin. Sharps & yellow bags are classed as clinical waste & a duty of care invoice is applicable in this instance. Failure to comply with the 'duty of care' is a criminal offence.

Some Podiatry/Chiropody suppliers also provide sharps collections service though you may be better contacting them directly.

Check with the Environment Agency - their web site has all details - only infected clinical waste requires "consignment" unless it has changed recently - dont rely on what other people tell you there are large fines for people not complying with the law so I would suggest to start wth the environment agency

 

Hi Evepod -having tried various sources over a period of years I found that my local authority offered the best service i.e the least expensive and the most reliable.They collected waste & sharps as and when I required which was also more flexible than commercial "specialists".
You have a legal obligation to dispose of your waste responsibly and this means a paper trail from you to the disposal site.
