Cost modelling for fabrication of custom-made foot orthoses using 3D Printing Technique

Rapid manufacturing (RM) techniques construct the products guided through computer aided designing systems through various
fabrication methods involving extrusion; sintering and photo polymerisation through deposition of material guided by CAD designed
information of the parts. The rapid manufacturing techniques have the advantages of design freedom, increased part accuracy and
consistency in production of final part. Recently the adoption of these techniques in various manufacturing sectors for direct production of
the parts has been moved from 4% in year 2003 to nearly 20% in year 2011. This is driven by continuous reductions in material and
machines costs which are the important factors that have increased the trend of application of rapid manufacturing techniques in different
manufacturing sectors. Applications of rapid manufacturing techniques require productivity analyses that ultimately influence the
manufacturer?s decision for commercial scale applications of these techniques for low-volume production and production of custom-made
parts; especially in medical sector. The requirement of production of custom-made parts, rehabilitation aids and devices in medical sector is
explicitly higher in comparison to other manufacturing sectors. In this papercost and lead-time modelling is conducted for one of the rapid
manufacturing technique named 3D printing for fabrication of custom-made foot orthosis. The results showed that fabrication cost GBP 288.55
per pair of foot orthoses. The techniques also showed the advantage of reduced product lead-time.

Is that right a cost of nearly ?300?

If you read the article it has also taken in to account amortisation.

A lot of people that dont understand business, only count the time of labour and the value of material as a cost.

The machine takes up capital at a cost, takes up space at a cost, requires maintenance at a cost and so on.

" The computation of machine cost per year was estimated through cost of
depreciation of machine per year. The maintenance cost per year was added with the 10% of the total cost of the machine.
For the machine the depreciation cost was assumed for 5 years."

There are many important roles of the orthotic insoles, such as for the convenience purpose of diabetic
patient’s foot problem, and also to enhance athlete’s performance in sports. Therefore, highly customised insoles were
in demand, where it has to be fabricated by moulding plaster of Paris on the person’s leg to customise the insole. The
main purpose of the paper is to study the ability to implement additive manufacturing technology in the fabrication
process of customised orthotics insole. The recent invention of flexible material (Filaflex) in Fused Deposition Modelling
is the most significant reason that makes this fabrication process possible. By implementing a new approach to the 3D
scanning of the foot, we produced the computer-aided drafting (CAD) drawing which was able to modify to desired
shape and dimension. After the editing has been completed, the file was converted to Stereolithography format file
(STL) as to enable it to be printed using Makerware or any other related software by sending command (G-code) to
Flashforge 3D printer. The printed insole was tested its fit, form and function (also known as 3F). In the end, printed
insole performs the function test which measures the plantar pressure of the foot compared with bare foot. The results
show that the insole distributes pressure well throughout the foot surface, in which it reduced the peak pressure to half
from 218KPa to 109KPa. Hence, it is concluded that the method proposed in this paper can produce a functional insole
so that it can be the alternative way to make customised orthotic insoles.
