hi I have just spent the best part of nine months applying for and getting refusal for d1 planning consent for expansion of my surgery to new premises. The refusal for all d1 is mainly due to parking restrictions. This appears to be a nationwide problem. Apparantley for every three clinical rooms I have I must have 11 car parking spaces. As you can imagine this is a ridiculous amount of spaces to try to obtain with the leasing of property. Anyone ie doctors dentist opticians etc must have this minimum standards. Can anyone help with any advice if they have overcome this problem? I have now engaged the help of my local MP as I feel that we as health care providers are been discriminated against. If I was a beautician or hairdresser with three chairs and half hourly appointments this restrcition apparantly is not applied as it is classed as retail. Any help greatly appreciated

In Victoria it is 5 per practitioner, but they do have large discretionary choice, I got let off with 10 for three rooms in a country town, took a year though.

I am currently increasing the size of my clinic, and as you have stated the previous requirement was 11 spaces for 3 treatment rooms. However, the Highways Engineer has now proposed reducing to 4 spaces, of a higher quality. I suppose these specifications are council driven, and will be linked to their planning strategy. I know our council are looking to reduce journeys by car, so have removed their tick box approach to minimum spaces.
Have you spoken to the Highways Engineer? They may be able to advise. I'd be interested to hear how you get on, and good luck.

Class yourself as retail. You are selling a service.
We have similar problems in Australia.
I could, and would, murder my local town planner. 6 years in jail....nothing compared to the misery she has caused people.
