Hi,

I was just wondering what others interpretation of the DVA footwear prescription is.
I recently had a DVA patient that attended for the first time and requested a new pair of DVA supplied shoes for bowls. I advised him that the guidelines for MGF from DVA are some what strict. He advised me that his friend sees another podiatrist and he gets 2 pairs a year for golf and bowls.

This patient does have difficulty with shoe fitting due to a significant hallux valgus.

Apart from gross foot deformity, when is it appropriate to prescribe MGF/ready made?

have I misinterpreted the rules?

yes they can have a pair of bowl shoes one pair a year if they require depth/width to accommodate a deformitie. such as hallux abducto valgus. if a normal bowl shoe causes stress to foot.

I have a few D.V.A pts that require medical grade foot wear for bowls and golf.

l notice you are in SA, you might like to contact Ben and Jody Playford, they should be able to look after your clients needs for medical grade footwear

 

The provision of medical grade footwear to DVA recipients, is based on a clincal need. Once footwear has been approved and delivered, the intial issue is 2 pairs plus a recreational pair. The recreational pair may be a bowls shoe or golf shoe or an appropriate walking shoe. The shoes to be provided must be on the "approved" list which can be found by visiting the DVA web site.
Contrary to a popular mis conception, there is no automatic entitlement for replacement. The DVA will pay for repairs and or a modification consitent with use. Replacement is based on an assessment that the shoes are beyond repair or that the shoe no longer meets the medical condition presented, or there is a change of circumstances such as surgery or amputation.

If more clarification is required, may I suggest that you contact the DVA Podiatry advisor in each state

The new DVA contracts are now in for MGF suppliers, not much of a price increase, but we will make do.:boohoo:

 

Not sure if the prescription has been filled as yet. Have a suspicion that the patient may have gone elsewhere as he was determined to get 2 pairs of custom shoes.
