The School of Health Sciences at the University of Birmingham is developing an Extended scope PgCert and Masters level module (subject to approval) and would welcome your comments......
Aim of the Extended scope module
This module, designed for AHPs, allows students to critically evaluate the role of an extended scope practitioner within the context of evidence based practice and patient centred care. This will enable students to analyse their existing practice and identify their learning needs to advance their practice and develop an extended role within the interdisciplinary team. Extended Scope of Practice requires that professionals justify their decision making and utilise evidence to support advanced clinical reasoning skills. With the availability of additional diagnostic tools for the extended scope practitioner, professionals will critically evaluate the use of these tools and justify their use in conjunction with ongoing patient management. The use of outcome measures is essential to enable evaluation of therapeutic choices and students will critically appraise a range of outcome measures used in their practice. A period of negotiated independent study will allow students to personalise and contextualise these concepts with the aim of planning how to work towards developing extended scope of practice within their own area of practice. Consequently, the module is designed to enable supported personal and professional development of the student's own area of practice, as a strategy for advancing their practice. It is anticipated that students will represent two distinct groups: those working in an extended scope role looking to strengthen and develop their existing role, and those looking to develop their profile to facilitate application for an extended scope role.
PgCert
The PgCert consists of 3 modules: Developing Evidence Based Practice module, Evidence Based Clinical Practice module and the Extended Scope module detailed above. The Evidence Based Clinical Practice module will facilitate integration of learning into the practice context through a period of placement experience tailored to an individual's learning needs, for example new skill acquisition.
We would welcome your feedback on the following:
1. Your level of interest in the module / PgCert?
2. The feasibility of our costs - £1000 for the module and £3000 for the PgCert?
Please email your comments by 10th february 2006 to Alison Rushton (Programme Director) on a.b.rushton@bham.ac.uk
