FEDERAL BUDGET IS A MISSED OPPORTUNITY

The Federal Government has missed out on a very real opportunity to improve the health of Australians living with diabetes.

The Government has rejected a proposal by the Australasian Podiatry Council to substantially reduce the diabetes-related amputation rate by increasing Medicare-subsidised podiatry appointments.

Australasian Podiatry Council President, Andrew Schox says it’s a deeply disappointing decision.

‘It seems like the Government has been so driven to deliver a surplus, it’s lost sight of what’s really important. Every single week, 85 Australians lose a lower limb because of diabetes-related complications,’ Mr Schox said.

‘The human cost of this is terrible enough. The economic cost is also very high, with a leg amputation costing around $100,000 per person.’

‘We proposed a very simple evidence-based plan which would have cost $300M less than the current system and saved over 3,000 limbs,’ Mr Schox continued.

‘Commentators suggest this budget was a visionary budget with blind spots. Unfortunately it appears that the diabetes tsunami is in one of those blind spots. We look forward to working harder with the government and opposition to open their eyes to this missed opportunity,’ Mr Schox concluded.
