Hi all,

Just wanting to know whether or not one who completes their Podiatric surgical training and gains their qualifications in Australia is able to work in the UK and/or Spain as a fully qualified Podiatric surgeon (publicly and privately)?

Any answers would be very welcome.

In short, no. It's unlikely.

As far as I'm aware there is no reciprocal arrangement for recognition of surgical qualifications between the countries you have mentioned. However, you are best speaking to your professional body for the latest info:

The situation in the U.K. is that in order to obtain private hospital privileges you are required to have, or have had, substantive employment in the National Health Service as a consultant podiatric surgeon. To build your own operating facility, which has to be approved by government appointed inspectors (ex NHS) would be financially impractical; also impractical regarding the required referral from General Practitioners necessary to validate private medical insurance claims. Ultimately, it would be for you to convince the NHS that your qualification was suitable for employment as a consultant - and that is not easy. However, since the Health Professions Council have clearly stated that the only qualification in surgery which they do recognise is the old FPodA, (see post regarding Amin Sain hearing) it is unlikely that you would be successful.

I am familiar with several US trained podiatric surgeons who have moved to Austrailia. Is there licensure reciprocity? I assume that you would have to work under a work visa and get someone/hospital to "sponsor" you. Anybody know???

 

The current arrangements are that you are required to sit the national compentency examination first, to allow you to be registered as a general podiatrist with the Podiatrists Board in whatever state you practice. This allows you to perform work as a podiatrist, but restricted surgical scope to cutaneus procedures.

After this step is completed, you can apply to the Australasian College of Podiatric Surgeons to have your log book, education and experience assessed, and then you will be given advice as to what competency examinations (theory/practical) are required for admission as a Fellow of the College.

Once you have obtained Fellowship you are then able to practice as an independent podiatric surgeon, as long as you abide by the ACPS and registration board policies pertaining to the practice of podiatric surgery (eg indemnity, peer review etc).
