Dear all,

I have just come across this new programme designed by QMU Edinburgh which will begin in September 2019.

It appears to be a doctorate programme of Podiatric surgery designed for podiatrists who are working in extended scope msk podiatry and Podiatric or orthopaedic surgical environments. It requires at least two years clinical experience in a specialist msk/orthopaedic environment and it also requires the applicant to have completed the MSc theory of podiatric surgery.

It explains that it has been designed for podiatrists who want to pursue a career in podiatric surgery, though I quote
‘It is important to note that this programme is separate and distinct from the programme offered by the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists and is not currently recognised for their fellowship award nor the College of Podiatry award of completion of podiatric surgical training.’

The doctorate programme is approved by the HCPC and takes 3 years full time or 5 years part time. On completion, you are awarded a Certificate in Podiatric Surgery (230 Credits). The course will, I quote,
‘Allow you to gain the necessary skills to carry out a range of forefoot procedures within an agreed scope of practice’.

I have a few questions that I highlight below;

I am wondering what current consultant podiatric surgeons think of this?

As it is a separate programme than the one offered by the SCP, is one eligible to begin looking for an SPR podiatric surgery post following completion of the doctorate or must they first complete pupillage like the original system?

Is this to become a replacement for the original 3 year pupillage programme?

Following completion of the doctorate programme, what posts would one be entitled to apply for? What would ones title be (considering it is not going to be consultant podiatric surgeon)?

As a current MSc theory of podiatric surgery student working within a surgical environment, would you advise one to apply for this programme or go along the traditional route and try and find pupillage on completion of the MSc.

I would appreciate anyone’s input and if anyone could answer any of the above questions. It would be nice to see a discussion on the topic from prospective trainees, current trainees and of course, consultant podiatric surgeons.
