    New study led by Victoria University seeking participants:
    Gait adaptability of older adults with Type 2 diabetes
    As much as 50% of people with diabetes will develop diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), caused by longstanding sub-optimal blood glucose levels. Falls as one of the complications of diabetes is recognised as having a major impact on the quality of life of older adults. Older adults (>60 years of age) with DPN are 17 - 23 times more likely to fall compared to older adults without DPN and they are twice as likely to have injurious falls. One of the risk factors for falls is impaired gait adaptability; walking abilities to interact with dynamic environments. Previous research provides strong support that falls in this group are caused by reduced walking abilities to adapt their gait pattern to changes in the environment.

    This research study aims to evaluate walking abilities, responses to sudden required changes of steps or foot clearance, of this group during walking, and whether these abilities can be improved using a novel treadmill walking with visual feedback.

    We are seeking 25 people to participate in this project who are:
    - 60-75 years of age
    - Physically capable of independent continuous walking for 15 minutes
    - have diabetes related peripheral neuropathy (DPN)
