New treatment for diabetic foot ulcers

Korean scientists have developed a new treatment for diabetic foot ulcers, the most common cause of hospitalization among people with diabetes.
Koh Gou-young and Cho Cheng-hyun, professors at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, said they discovered a new protein treatment which facilitates skin growth in blood vessels and ultimately heals diabetic foot ulcers.

The team's breakthrough will be published in today's online edition of "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America."

Dubbed "COMP-Ang1," the new treatment is an innovative way in treating foot ulcers, which are estimated to affect as many as one in 10 people with last-phase diabetes, Koh said.

Diabetic foot ulcers cause decay in a diabetic's feet and can even lead to amputation.

"Not only people with diabetes but also patients with minor blood vessel problems or cerebral apoplexy can be the beneficiaries of COMP-Ang1. Patients whose blood flow is not good and cannot get a sufficient supply of oxygen or nutrients will be helped by this treatment. With COMP-Ang1, they can regain healthy blood flow," Koh explained.

Koh's team made ulcerous wounds in the tails of diabetic rats and implemented whole and partial injections of the treatment.

As a result, the team discovered that COMP-Ang1 facilitates skin growth in minute blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, as well as increases the overall blood flow, which led to a 100 percent improvement in difficult-to-heal wounds.

Around 200 million patients suffer from diabetes worldwide. The number is steadily increasing and is expected to reach 300 million in 2020.

GenExel-Sein Inc., an affiliate bio-medicine venture of KAIST, owns the exclusive right to the new treatment and its clinical applications. The company is currently putting the treatment through pre-clinical trials.

The study was co-supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy.

"The new treatment, if approved and commercialized, will be the first protein treatment in the global market for engineering new skin in blood vessels. The commercial value of this treatment is expected to reach two trillion won," Koh said.
