On my recent visit to Germany I got a chance to talk to a local podiatrist who introduced me to the idea of nail bracing ie. orthonyxia as a treatment for ingrown toenails. I graduated just over two years ago and during the course of my studies I was thought all about the surgical approach and some conservative treatments, however not the bracing techniques. From what i gathered through a quick google browse it is a long used treatment across Europe. It has been thought years ago in UK however braces at the time were very bulky and patients could not accommodate them in their shoes well. With current technology nail braces are very slim, adhesive devices and most literature says that although the recurrance rate is higher, the patients pain has reduced withing 1-3 weeks, and the nail curvature flatens 3-6months later, its a non invasive procedure so even diabetics and others who would not qualify for a nail surgery could avail of this treatment. Does anyone in UK/Ireland uses nail bracing? Or would anyone know of any courses to explore the area further? To me it sounds like a great alternative to surgery especially for those who as mentioned above could not have a surgery due to medical issues. All thoughts welcome :)
