BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE:
Plantar fasciitis (PF) is a foot disorder in adults secondary to an inflammatory response caused by repetitive micro-trauma. We evaluated and compared the impact on quality of life (QoL) related to foot health and general health between males and females with PF.

METHODS:
In this cross-sectional descriptive study, patients with PF were recruited from a podiatry clinic. Physical examination, sociodemographic data, and the self-reported Foot Health Status Questionnaire (FHSQ) were recorded. The FHSQ has three sections and provides two composite scores from 0 to 100. Higher scores (close to 100) reflect better QoL related to foot health and health in general; lower scores (close to 0) denote a worse QoL related to these health items.

RESULTS:
One hundred patients (49 males [42.38 ± 14.065 years old] and 51 females [43.90 ± 14.305 years old]) were recruited. Section one of the FHSQ evaluates four foot domains, and significant differences (P<0.05) were shown for foot pain and footwear, with males having higher scores than females, but not for foot function and general foot health (P>0.05). Section two assesses four domains of general wellbeing, and significant differences (P<0.05) were shown for overall health, physical function, social capacity, and vigor, with males having higher scores than females.

CONCLUSION:
Females with PF showed a worse health-related QoL for foot pain, foot function, footwear, and general foot health than males. A better health-related QoL was also shown for males with PF than for females with regard to general health, physical activity, social capacity, and vigor.

Age, Body Mass Index, and Spur Size Associated with Patients' Symptoms in Plantar Fasciitis

Background: Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of heel pain affecting 10% of the general population. This study aimed to investigate the specific symptoms in patients with plantar fasciitis using the Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS) questionnaire and their relationship with demographic and radiographic factors.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 73 consecutive patients (mean age, 53.8 ± 10.0 years; 20 men and 53 women) with plantar fasciitis who had visited our foot and ankle clinic and undergone weight-bearing foot X-ray examinations. Their demographic data, anteroposterior and lateral talo-first metatarsal angles, intermetatarsal and hallux valgus angles, and responses to the FAOS questionnaire were recorded.

Results: The quality-of-life subscale showed the lowest score of all FAOS subscales. Age was significantly correlated with quality of life (r = 0.297, p = 0.011), and body mass index was correlated with the function in sports and recreational activities (r = -0.251, p = 0.032). Age and body mass index were statistically significantly correlated with calcaneal spur size (r = 0.274, p = 0.027 and r = 0.324, p = 0.008, respectively). The calcaneal spur size was significantly correlated with pain (r = -0.348, p = 0.004), function in daily living (r = -0.410, p = 0.001), and function in sports and recreational activities (r = -0.439, p < 0.001).

Conclusions: Demographic factors were associated with specific symptoms in patients with plantar fasciitis. Calcaneal spur size was the only radiographic parameter correlated with symptoms. These findings help communicate with patients, set appropriate treatment goals, and evaluate treatment effectiveness.

Good read, thanks for posting. Plantar fasciitis and heel spur syndrome is a painful condition that podiatrists are able to cure. I like the heat moldable custom orthotics. They allow the doctor to fabricate a custom arch support in the office. Patients can even do it themselves.

Health-related quality of life is substantially worse in individuals with plantar heel pain

This study aimed to compare health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in people with and without plantar heel pain (PHP). This was a cross-sectional observational study that compared 50 adult participants with PHP to 25 participants without PHP who were matched for age, sex and body mass index (BMI). HRQoL measures included a generic measure, the Short Form 36 version 2 (SF-36v2), and foot-specific measures, including 100 mm visual analogue scales (VASs) for pain, the Foot Health Status Questionnaire (FHSQ), and the Foot Function Index-Revised (FFI-R). Comparisons in HRQoL between the two groups were conducted using linear regression, with additional adjustment for the comorbidity, osteoarthritis, which was found to be substantially different between the two groups. For generic HRQoL, participants with PHP scored worse in the SF-36v2 physical component summary score (p < 0.001, large effect size), but there was no difference in the mental component summary score (p = 0.690, very small effect size). Specifically, physical function (p < 0.001, very large effect size), role physical (p < 0.001, large effect size) and bodily pain (p < 0.001, large effect size) in the physical component section were worse in those with PHP. For foot-specific HRQoL, participants with PHP also scored worse in the VASs, the FHSQ and the FFI-R (p ≤ 0.005, huge effect sizes for all domains, except FHSQ footwear, which was large effect size, and FFR-R stiffness, activity limitation, and social issues, which were very large effect sizes). After accounting for age, sex, BMI and osteoarthritis, adults with PHP have poorer generic and foot-specific HRQoL.

Validation of the Foot and Ankle Outcome Score for Use in Infracalcaneal Heel Pain

There is growing interest in adopting validated and reliable patient-reported outcome measures following surgery. While the Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS) has previously been validated for use in multiple foot/ankle conditions, it has not yet been validated in patients with infracalcaneal heel pain. In this study we aimed to validate the FAOS by looking at 4 psychometric properties of the survey: construct validity, content validity, reliability, and responsiveness, using patients in our practice with a clinical diagnosis of plantar fasciitis. A total of 150 patients (mean age 49.7 ± 12.1 years [36 men and 114 women]) were included in one or more of the 4 components of this study. All FAOS subscales demonstrated adequate construct validity when compared with the physical health component of the 12-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12), and 2 out of 5 subscales demonstrated moderate correlation with the mental health component of SF-12 (all Spearman rho >0.3, and p values <0.05). Most FAOS subscales demonstrated content validity and were found to contain relevant questions from the patient's perspective. All 5 subscales demonstrated good test-retest reliability with intraclass correlation coefficients ≥ 0.827. Finally, 4 out of the 5 subscales (all but other symptoms) were responsive to change at a mean follow up of 12.2 months after surgery (p < .05). We conclude that the FAOS is a responsive, reliable, and valid instrument for use in infracalcaneal heel pain. We believe that due to its ease of use and broad applicability, the FAOS could be more widely adopted in foot/ankle practices as patient-centered healthcare delivery and research becomes increasingly prioritized in the US and abroad.

Objectives
The objective is to assess the extent of foot-specific and generic health-related quality of life (HRQoL) impairment among individuals diagnosed with plantar fasciitis (PF) at King Khalid University, Saudi Arabia, and to determine the influence of various sociodemographic and clinical factors.

Methods
In this cross-sectional study, we administered an online survey from March to June 2023 to patients with PF at King Khalid University Hospital. This questionnaire covered sociodemographic, and clinical characteristics, and included the translated Foot Health Status Questionnaire (FHSQ). Further, patient data were obtained from hospital records between 2016 and 2023 using the E-SIHI system.

Results
We recruited 209 patients for the study. Lower FHSQ scores were found in unemployed and low-income participants indicating a worse quality of life (QoL) in the Foot Pain domain, while those aged over 40 years and with low income showed greater impairment in the General Foot Health domain. No single factor influenced the Foot Function or Footwear domains. Worse General Health and Physical Activity scores were associated with low-education and low-income participants and those who did not exercise. Women exhibited a lower QoL than men in all domains except for General Health.

Conclusion
The QoL of Saudi women with PF was similar to that of women in other countries. However, the patients in the present study reported poorer footwear scores but better General Health scores. Therefore, focusing more on proper footwear-related treatments may help improve the QoL of patients with PF.
