BACKGROUND: Salespersons are required to stand for long periods of time during work. Prolonged standing is one physical factor contributing to the development of musculoskeletal symptoms in the working population.

AIMS: To estimate the 12-month prevalence of self-reported musculoskeletal symptoms in the head/neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists/hands, upper back, low back, hips, knees and ankles/feet in salespersons.

METHODS: A cross-sectional survey using a descriptive questionnaire was used to evaluate musculoskeletal symptoms in 1310 female salespersons in 18 department stores.

RESULTS: Of the 1200 subjects (92%) who completed the questionnaire, 1189 were eligible for inclusion in the study. The 1-year prevalence of self-reported musculoskeletal symptoms was 77%. The ankle/foot (35%) was the most frequently affected body region followed by low back (34%), knees (33%), hips (28%), shoulders (28%), head/neck (26%), upper back (21%), wrists/hands (14%) and elbows (3%). The older the salespersons were, the more likely they were to report knee symptoms (P < 0.05). Salespersons with a body mass index (BMI) >23 kg/m(2) were more likely to report knee symptoms than those with a BMI <18.5 kg/m(2) (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS: Musculoskeletal symptoms are common among salespersons with a high proportion experiencing symptoms in the low back, knees and ankles/feet. The prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms in the knees is associated with age and BMI. Attention should be given to developing specific measures to reduce or prevent musculoskeletal symptoms in salespersons.

Prevalence and Characteristics of Musculoskeletal Pain in Korean Farmers.

OBJECTIVE:
To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of musculoskeletal pain (MSK) pain in Korean farmers using initial survey data of Farmers' Cohort for Agricultural Work-Related MSK pain (FARM) study.
METHODS:
Farmers (534 females and 479 males; mean age 57.2?7.5 years) who owned or rented a farm and belonged to an agricultural cooperative unit were recruited. Presence of pain for each body part (neck, shoulder, arm/elbow, wrist/hand/finger, low back, leg/foot), and characteristics of MSK pain (prevalence, location, duration, severity, and frequency) during the last year was assessed. Additionally, demographic data such as farming duration, history of prior injury, and workload (low, moderate, somewhat hard, or hard) were collected using structured questionnaires.
RESULTS:
Almost all subjects (n=925; 91.3%) complained of pain in more than one body part. The frequency order was low back (63.8%), leg/foot (43.3%), shoulder (42.9%), wrist/hand/finger (26.6%), arm/elbow (25.3%), and neck (21.8%). Low back pain was more frequent in those with over 30 years of farming experience (odds ratio [OR], 1.40; 95% confidence interval, 1.08-1.81). MSK pain was related to history of prior injury (OR, 2.18-5.24; p<0.05) in all body parts except for leg/foot, and very hard workload was associated with low back, leg/foot, neck, shoulder, and wrist/hand/finger pain (OR, 2.88-10.83; p<0.05).
CONCLUSION:
Most Korean farmers experience MSK pain; furthermore, there is a significant association between pain, history of prior injury, and workload, suggestive of the necessity of coping and preventive strategies to reduce injury or workload.

Musculoskeletal Disorders in Tyre Manufacturing Workers

Background: Tyre manufacturing workers are at risk of developing WRMSDs as their job repeatedly involves elevated arm postures, lifting of tyres, pushing or pulling trolleys, trunk bending and twisting.

Aim: To assess WRMSDs in tyre manufacturing workers.

Methodology: This was an observational study involving 99 tyre manufacturing workers. Persons with any history of recent trauma, major hospitalization or surgery in past 12 months were excluded. Workers were screened according to Nordic questionnaire for assessing the musculoskeletal disorders and REBA analysis was done. They were also assessed for flexibility of hamstring using AKE test and isometric endurance of back extensors using Sorenson test.

Results: 97% workers were under 30 years of age and 91% were males. The average duration of work was 27 months. In the past 12 months, 36% workers reported low back pain, 24.2% shoulder pain, 24.2% neck pain, 19% knee pain and 20% ankle/foot pain. REBA analysis revealed TBR and PCR manufacturing workers to be at higher and lower end of medium risk category, respectively. Average AKE values were 39.450 and 38.450 on the right and left, respectively, indicating that hamstring tightness was common, average back muscle endurance was 40.68 sec. However, AKE or back muscle endurance was not statistically related to back pain (P > 0.05).

Conclusion: Tyre workers showed involvement of multiple joints. LBP was predominant complaint but was not related to hamstrings tightness or back muscle endurance.

Work-related musculoskeletal pain in prosthetists and orthotists: a comparison between Australia and other countries

Background: Musculoskeletal pain (MSP) is a substantial societal and personal burden resulting in loss of employment and reduced productivity. Prosthetics and orthotics professionals working in Australia have previously reported a high prevalence of MSP; however, little is known about the prosthetic and orthotic communities in other countries.

Objectives: To explore the prevalence and range of workplace exposures associated with MSP in a convenience sample of the international prosthetic and orthotic profession.

Study design: A cross-sectional study using a convenience sample was conducted with prosthetists and orthotists worldwide.

Methods: Prosthetists and orthotists were invited to participate in a survey to explore work-related factors associated with MSP. Bivariate and regression modelling was used to examine associations between self-reported demographic and workplace characteristics including job satisfaction, work-life balance, and physical and psychosocial hazards.

Results: Seventy-six percent of respondents (n = 173) reported MSP in the previous 6 months. However, MSP was associated with different factors in Australia compared with other countries. Among Australia-based prosthetists and orthotists, MSP was associated with sex, physical hazards, and psychosocial hazards. For the international sample, MSP was only associated with length of employment.

Conclusions: Three-quarters of all respondents reported having MSP. Differences in associations between MSP and other factors by respondents' geographical location suggest the need for context-specific identification of hazards to enable the development of targeted and contextually appropriate prevention strategies.

SURVEY ANALYSIS OF COMMON FOOT PROBLEMS AMONG

Background: Importance of proper foot care in general should be a concern for people as
foot problems causes hindrances in their day to day activities. The problem actually becomes
a major concern when it does not allow a person to function at their workplace. For decades
people have had to suffer from many foot problems that occur due to the fact that they have to
either be in constant standing position or in constant motion at their workplace. Objectives:
The study identified the different types of foot and health problems seen in hotel employees
and its relation with footwear. Methodology: This study falls within a quantitative research
approach. To determine the foot problems in hotel employees, data collection was done
at four different hotels. The variables responsible for causing foot problems were listed in
a questionnaire and were analyzed in relation to the workplace using a cause and effect
correlational quantitative design. The sample size taken was 32. Sampling technique used was
a random probability sampling method. Of the total participants 62.5% were male and the
rest 37.5% were female. The participants were in the age bracket of 19-48 years. The locale
for data collection was Five Star Hotels in Delhi NCR region. The results were analyzed on
the basis of footwear and department employee worked in. Results: In this study it was found
that 87.5% of the participants had to stand for more than 6 hours at their workplace. Blisters
with 41.4% and Corn with 34.5% were found to be the most common foot problem faced by
Hotel Employees. Swelling, Back Pain and Muscle Fatigue were the most common Health
Related issues found among Hotel Employees with existing Foot Problems. Conclusion: Every
organization needs to assess the footwear used by their employees and make them wear
footwear which is comfortable, better fitting, have soft mattress. Also the organization needs
to ensure that while working an employee practices good amount of ergonomic principles,
incorporate breaks during his shift and follow better gait practices
