Hi my name is Phuong, and i am a third Year Podiatry student from South Australia. As part of my studies, i have to do a proposal for a research project. I would like to do mine on wound dressings.
I want to compare two dressings, such as a silver vs an aquacel, and determine its effectiveness, healing time and also the costs involved.
Does anyone know if this is a good topic to look at or can someone give me some advice regarding this topic?

    Many thanks
    Phuong

    Hi Phuong,

    :welcome: to The Arena :D

    Your request:

Most (but possibly not all) posters check out the introductions area of the forum.

If you copy & paste your question into the Diabetic Foot & Wound Management area those with specific knowledge RE: these dressings & research may post replies. An added bonus is by posting your question there it will appear in the column on the right of the home page for all to see. ;)

    Good luck & regards :drinks

Hi Puong, another way to access info is to join your wound association fo SA.

These associations are not that expensive to join, you can then go to info evenings and receive annual and usually monthly newletters.

Also check if your state assoc has any specil interest groups, some times they will have a diabetes one, again you can join and access there meetings.

    Good luck

    Phoung,

it is fine to compare 2 dressing products, and as you are just developing a proposal rather than carring out the research it should be OK.

Dressings based research is very difficult because the cause and treatment of foot ulcers is multifacited, but good randomisation will handle most of this, but your sample may need to be quite large depending on the effect you expect.

The other problem with dressing research is that different dressing products are often used at different stages of the wound healing process.

You propose to compare " a silver dressing" of which there are now very many all with different properites, and according to the suppliers different effects, some are nano crystals, some leech into the wound, others don't etc.

Also Aquacel is a brand name for a specific type of alginate dressing, again of which there are many all slightly different.

There are a couple of Chochrane studies on silver dressings one completed by podiatrist Shan Bergin et.al.

    http://www.cochrane.org/reviews/en/ab005082.html

    http://www.cochrane.org/reviews/en/ab005486.html

indicating the need for good trials on both the outcomes and cost benefits of silver dressings
