Re: Large regional variations in diabetes amputation rates in the UK
At the SCP 2009 Harrogate conference, the keynote lecture was, "Can We Halve the No. of Lower Limb Amputations caused by Diabetes, in the UK By 2012".
Yes, provided that blood sugar levels are under good control in the early stages, patients check their feet daily, and report possible problems asap.
It seems that some parts of the country are better than others at this. -
Re: Large regional variations in diabetes amputation rates in the UK
Agreed,
But until we have uniformity in behaviour, diet, exercise, Social behaviour, Religious practice, Racial practice.
This will not happen.
If a Diabetic is achieving a longer life span despite not following good practice with regards to the control and management of the Diabetes then AMPUTATION NUMBERS will without doubt increase.
Along with blindness kidney disease vascular disease cardiac disease.
Life is a sexually transmitted fatal disease.:butcher:
Just how and when.
So good conduct is required to prevent pathologies and morbidity.
What was the life expectancy of a Type 1 diabetic 1n 1945 and what is it today.
What is the incidence of Type 1 Diabetes in the population today compared to 1945.
I found this article on the radio today interesting in its naivety.
Might do us some good though with greater awareness of problems with feet.
Do we capitalise on this report to promote our services?

Re: Large regional variations in diabetes amputation rates in the UK
I Have just been listening to Jeremy Vine on Radio 2.
A speaker from Diabetes UK was extolling the virtues if sending out blue vans to assess risk factors for diabetes in the population.
Not once did I hear the facts such as in the main the NHS wont see diabetics unless they have a history of ulceration or amputation and the difficulty we have getting direct access to multidisciplinary hospital care ??
Not forgetting thay may have to PAY:eek: to see a Podiatrist to help prevent the lead up to amputation.
But the blue vans I'm sure will go down well
I'm gonna listen to it again on i player later because I swear someone said "bacteria stick to the sugar in the blood" !!!!
All the professional bodies were as usual silent in promoting Podiatry on the show:bang:
Cheers
