Dear all,

I would like to hear experiences due to rocker bottom shoes (such as MBT's) for diabetics, mainly Charcot's foot.

I would have thought the negative heels of MBT's would make them dangerous in those with Charcots.

 

We use Rocker bottoms for our diabetic population on shoes but they are custom additions, so the rocker is in the correct place for the foot, and usually accompanied by an appropriate FO.

 

Yes, but removable cast walkers widely used for Charcot's foot treatment also create a negative heel. Although, removable cast walker produce a gait pattern far different from rocker bottom shoes because they are applied to one extremity, they create a limb length discrepancy and they have a rigid long leg arm.

The last thing you want to do in any NIDDM patient is increase pressure in a loading area. This advice and their constant advertising as 'good for diabetics' is very very dangerous. IMHO.

MBT shoes reduce midfoot peak pressure by 22% (good for Charcot's foot) but increased forefoot peak pressure by 76% (definitely not good neither for Charcot's foot or non-Charcot's diabetic foot). Although, common rocker bottom shoes increased midfoot peak pressure :eek: !

If someone knows about other studies due to vertical forces assessment comparing different shoes design for diabetic population, I would appreciate it.
