I am a retired Chiropodist dealing with patients before they were referred, to the medical profession. Although retired i still have an interest in feet. Mostly practical, for instance i would name a big toe for what it was. No use blinding anybody with science. That was was going in to eventually to have a bunion..

I would try to retrain it first by putting a strip of plaster as far as the insole. tightening it on occasions. Other words to train it if i could. I have seen some good results from that one. Simple yes and easy on the patient.
