I was attracted to podiatry for many reasons, one important reason for me was that I wanted to be in business for myself...by myself. I know some of you wanted the same thing, but due to the pressures of finance as well as the way medicine is heading... you have chosen group or hospital practices. I am sure for many of you it has been the right choice. For others, maybe not.
For over 17 years, I have enjoyed the personal gratification of helping my patients... and at the same time, I have enjoyed the lifestyle a solo practice has given me. However, lately I have been working more and living less. I know I am not alone. I refuse to retire early as many others are considering. I refuse to knuckle under to this oppressive system and would rather offer my services for free than to be a puppet (with strings that are yanked by insurance companies and now the government). Solo practice is just too good to give up. As for how the government is making the lives of all doctors miserable... maybe a physcians union isn't such a bad idea after all.
As for me, I plan to continue practicing podiatry solo in my little corner of the world. God has blessed this practice with mostly pleasant patients and a humble portion of prosperity for which I am most grateful. Was it not for Christ, I would not even be a podiatrist. He lifted me up and carried me through some of the most trying times during my medical education. He saw me through the struggles of opening up my practice as well as paying off my business and educational loans. He deserves all the glory. I trust He will continue to provide... for as long as He wants me to be a solo practitioner.

Hello Guy

Completely different part of the world but similar sentiments. All my life I have striven and finally managed to make a good living which I thought was impossible when I first entered podiatry education. I would like to pay tribute to those who unselfishly helped me along the way. However, unlike yourself, I am an agnostic, or perhaps a pantheist and am sure that many of our Hindu, Muslim, Jewish and Sikh colleagues, and followers of other religions would equally have taken inspiration from their spiritual beliefs.

I am fortunate enough to have a fairy who lives down near the back fence in my back garden. When it looks like my work might slow down, she (I know she's a she!) come out and influences potential new clients to call me, and reminds my old clients to get back in touch. She does this consistently despite anything I might do. On Sundays we have a roast dinner and throw a bit of meat down the back and before I know it, its gone! Who knew faried loved pork? Every morning I sit on the back step and thank my fairy for looking after my business. We can't take these things for granted. I'm sure if I'm good enough one day I'll become a fairy.........a big ugly one but hey, its better than having to acknowledge the truth.
