There are 20 intrinsic muscles in the foot and 26 bones, 33 joints, 106 ligaments in addition to all the muscles of the leg attaching to the foot below the ankle, not to mention motor and sensory nerves, arteries and veins, skin and skin structure, lymphatic and one of the most intricate complex of biomechanical engineering allowing weight bearing, shock absorption and propulsion of human gait.
In addition to any or a combination of painful areas directly related to an anatomic part are a myriad of general medical conditions that manifest as symptoms in the lower extremity and, of course, traumatic and overuse syndromes causing pain.
