Hi Kevin,
I hope you don't mind be contacting you directly like this.
I found a discussion on a message board (
http://www.podiatry-arena.com) around MTSS and found it all very interesting. I managed to decipher the general gist of what I read, although I'm still uncertain in some aspects.
I have been lead to believe I may have Medical Tibial Stress Syndrome. To give you a little history, I am a 23 year old male who started training for the British Royal Marine Commandos 12 months ago and started suffering from shin pain. I consulted my general practitioner who referred me to a specialist consultant at Fazakerley Hospital in Aintree, Liverpool. I was advised it may be one of three things: A stress fracture, MTSS or compartment syndrome. After the X-rays I was given the impression I had a slight overpronation in my foot which was causing inflamation of the muscle attached to the tibia. I was advised that there are several treatments for the condition such as physiotherapy and an operation, but as a last resort. After 4 months of rest (only walking) and regular physiotherapy, ultra-sound, ice treatment and sports massage the pain in my shin had almost gone. I sought some better supported trainers and began a very small amount of exercise again. Unfortunately the pain re-occurred almost instantly.
I was told it was more likely to be MTSS, so the next stage would be an MRI scan. I have an appointment for the MRI scan next week, and the consultant seems to be leaning towards an operation.
I have only 6 months until I must join the Royal Marines, or I will have passed the maximum age limit for entry. So although I am keen to have any treatment, I'm weary of an operation. There has been no mention of orthotics, which I read are your preferred method of treatment.
Do you have any suggestions?
Thank you in advance for your time and help.
